Ok Guru's, I'm exhausting all known resources. I'm working on a 2000 F-650 with the 7.3. I need to determine which compressor wheel will fit this. I have one for the GT 38 but this has a GT 3776D. Will these use the same wheel or what part number do I need?
Thanks for the replies. The turbo folk around here tell me these two will not interchange ( they think). The current wheel looks nothing like a wicked wheel or the 99-03 wheel. It also has the ported shroud intake. I cannot find part numbers to compare these two.
Does the housing have a recessed area for the wheel to sit in? The gt38 is a self balancing unit. Where as most Borg Warner turbos require balencing.
I would put a wheel in and see how it feels. I have never seen any other turbo on a 7.3 other that the gt38 and the obs unit from the factory. Is the truck intercooled??
It is intercooled. This particular unit is being very difficult to locate parts for. I found one company who can get the wheel and it does not appear to be the same. I'll update when I lay hands on it.
It'll be a few days for pics. Got some other things going on. I will say the DP chip woke this thing up. Waiting on gauges and comp wheel to turn it loose. May get to bring it to RRE this year. It's the 1st 7.3 F650 I've seen.
I appreciate the the replys. Clay, I've sent you a couple emails and I appreciate your help. I supposedly have one on order but we'll see. Trying to upload photos from iPhone but not having a lot of luck.
Update: The company who said they could get the wheel failed to produce. Clay has advised he can get it but with a 6-8 week wait. I'm considering placing a stock 2001 turbo on it if it will bolt up and all tubing matches. I am having some issues finding comparison charts for the 2. Garrets website doesn't even list the gtp38. They do have specs for the 3776 unit. I may try, as someone mentioned earlier, to place a ww on this unit to see if it will fit before I swap entire units. This one is very frustrating to say the least.
Ok, I ordered a wheel and of course it was wrong. Before calling Clay and begging for help, I tore into the turbo. After getting into it, I noticed several things. First off, it turns backwards compared to the 38r. Then I inspected the crack on the fin. I could not feel it at all. Turns out it was just a scratch in the outer covering. Cleaned it up, put it back together and sent him on his way a happy customer. Not sure what I'll do if he ever has turbo problems.
