I recently bought a 1971 F250 4WD that has had a 1976 460 swapped into it. If I had looked more closely before I bought it, I may have passed up on it. The truck made the 1100 mile trip home with no problems, and I haven't had any problems with motor mounts yet. But the other day I was up underneath the truck and got my first good look at them. This is what I found:
This is the passenger side, you can see the starter at the top of the picture. Could this possibly be correct? Shouldn't that mount be squared up on the perch? Also, notice how the nut barely catches all the treads on the stud.
Also, the perch does not appear to be bolted up in the right place. There are two orphaned hole in the perch and likewise two orphaned bolts sticking out of the frame.
This is the driver's side. The nut here does not even capture all of the threads on the stud.
I don't know how this should look, but I have a strong feeling that it shouldn't look like this. Has anyone here put a 460 into a bumpside highboy? If so, do you have any pictures?
What you have is the origional FE mounts turned so they bolt on the 460 block. The towers are custom made which might lead one to think if you invest in a real set of 460 mounts if they will even work with the custom built towers because they obviously were built with the intent of just using the FE mounts. I don't see anything wrong with whats been done, looks nice to me & there is plenty enough thread into that nut, if it bothers you go get one big hardened flat washer and eliminate the 2 they have stacked up. Lots of people have mounted their big blocks in that way and there are probably as I seem to remember, I might be wrong, only 2 bolts in the motor mounts and they hold up just fine. I wouldn't invest 10c in changing any of that.

Yeah I was hoping that just a set of proper 460 mounts would do the trick. I didn't know that this was a common way to do these mounts. I haven't had any problems and the only thing that I'm concerned about is whether or not it is safe.
It's not a common way anymore but back before any aftermarket conversion mounts were available it was about the only way of doing it. Now everybody and their brothers uncle makes their version of conversion mounts so you don't see it done that way much anymore. Not knowing how they came up with their measurements for the towers it's hard to say if you invested in some L&L, Trans Dapt, West Coast Bronco, etc. mounts if they would sit down right on those towers. I don't know just why someone would go to all that trouble to make towers from scratch when they are a dime a dozen in junk yards but they did a hell of a lob, it took a lot of work to make those.
Thats what I was thinking. Those are some stout and by appearances well built frame perches. About teh only thing I can say I don't like, is they did all that work on the perches and then didn't drill the frame to put in the bolts on the other side. I think with a mild engine would be fine though.
Well, they have stampings up on the underside, you can see them in the picture. So I'm thinking they may not be user fabricated. They are very similar to this L&L set.
