Alright guys, I pulled out my old stuck locking hubs today and put in Warn manual ones. Install went quick and easy, should've known something was wrong. When I took the EX to the field next door to try out the 4x4, locked the hubs, turned the switch to high 4x4, light came on, GREAT. Started driving it and it didn't seem stiffer or anything, turned the wheel hard left, no binding, hard right, no binding, reverse no binding in either direction. Now if memory serves, on my old 4x4 it bound like hell when turning the wheel tight. So is there an outward way to tell if the 4 wheel is actually locking in or not? I'll be honest, just bought the truck not too long ago and never checked to see if the 4 wheel lock in, just turned it to high and the light came on and I went with that . As well, the light for low wont come on even when the truck is in neutral. Any ideas? Here goes another couple hundred I bet....
Did you plug the vacuum lines when you removed them?
Was it working before you swapped the hubs?
I did plug the vacuum lines, capped them right there at the connection. and like I said, before I had only switched it to the high position, light came on, went with it. Should've made sure, but that's my idiot fault
Ok, i went under the truck, and turned the u-joints, with the hubs unlocked they moved freely and with them locked, the u-joints locked, so not a problem with the hubs. Any other ideas?
Well one perk to having manual hubs is that you can leave them in the unlock or "FREE" position, and the have some one move the truck forward while the 4x4 is switched to high, FROM A SAFE DISTANCE! If the front drive shaft turns while in motion you should have 4wd ( when you put the hubs back in the lock spot). As for the 4lo side of it, could just need a little work to get everything moving correctly again since by the sounds of things it hasn't been used much.
You checked the hubs. They work. Unlock the hubs and back up a few feet to ensure they are unlocked. Put the **** on the dash in 4wd. Pull forward a few feet to give the driveshaft time to start turning. Reach underneath and try to turn the driveshaft. If it doesn't work, the transfer case and **** and everything else works too.
Little update. Alright, locking hubs work. I kept them unlocked, threw it in 4 wheel, and had my wife drive it a bit, saw the drive shaft moving. When she stopped I didnt check to see if it was locked up and couldnt move it, but I assume that if its turning in 4 wheel and not when its in 2 wheel with the hubs unlocked the whole time that the transfer case and everything is working, so here's my final question. Why would the front end not bind when its locked in 4 wheel with the wheels turned tight? As well, I took the X on a little trip this weekend, and for some reason when the truck goes 65 mph and higher there is a very high pitch vibration in the front end. Almost feels like its under or close to the drivers seat. Only when im going above 65, and only when accelerating, not coasting. Any ideas if this has something to do with the 4 wheel? I thought it might when I changed out the locking hubs, and the fluid in the front diff but saw no damage or anything in the diff and the hubs seem to be working correctly. Im stumped.....
