first question 01 f-350 srw extended long bed auto. totally stock. is 14 mpg a good average for mixed town and highway driving no hauling or towing?(averaged 13.3 towing 30 ft. layton and hauling loads of campfire wood.happy with that.)
second i plan on doing exhaust and intake as soon as cash flow makes it possible but should i install guages first?

14 mpg is about what you can expect for mostly city driving.
17 mpg is about what you can expect for mostly highway driving.

At least that's how it's been working out for me so far...

Don't need gauges until you add a tuner or programmer. Stock it shouldn't peak the egt's. 4" exhaust is plenty and the 6637 kit from Clay 500$ tops.

X2! I would get the exhaust and intake first. Then I would plan on getting a Valve body from JW or BTS.

One thing you can do before you decide on where to spend: Look for soot near any exhaust component under the hood. An exhaust leak will rob you of power and economy. Before my Buck$Zookafest, I got 15.5 city/hwy and 17.5 on the highway, now I get 17.5 city/hwy and over 19 hwy... with the ability to rip ricers when I chose.

Also while doing exhaust you might want to look at doing the bellows type of pipe to the turbo

Upgraded up pipes that eliminate the slip joint style that are prone to leak.

Just thought while in there it's a good time to tackle it. And there would be a little more room to do things while the exhaust is out to be changed.

Bellowed up pipes are pre turbo and they aren't cheap. My truck had exhaust leaks on every component between the turbo and the block after 200K miles, so everything was replaced and that was my first bump in economy and power. If you don't have exhaust leaks, you will later - but I would not replace a properly functioning pre-turbo exhaust component.
