Early 2002 Explorer intermittant wont start issue

I know this isn't a guarantee, but your symptoms are VERY consistent with a failing fuel pump. But if you want to be sure, you're going to need to carry a few tools with you and understand how to use them. First would be a fuel pressure gauge to check for fuel pressure at the fuel rail when the problem occurs. Next would be a multimeter or test light to check for voltage to and through the fuel pump inertia switch.
Once you know how each of those are performing, further diagnosis can proceed.
If you plan to fix and keep the truck for awhile, you might want to replace the fuel filter to make sure that's not just plugged up, but that wouldn't be heat sensitive, just good maintenance.
