This is a 98 explorer 4.0 was running fine then went to start it cranks good would not start. checked relays and fuses all ok, check the fuel pump, can hear it run for about 2 seconds when I turn the key, checked the switch under the dash the button is set checked the wiring at this switch looks ok, put starting fluid into it and it fired for a brief second what else should I be checking for
Some Explorers, including mine lately, have experienced INTERMITTENT failure to kick over....meaning everything is fine for weeks/months, then one day it cranks just fine, but doesn't kick over or even seem like it wants to try. You'll need to read up on past posts cause different people have had different luck with EEC relay, fuel pump relay, bad connection at the PCM. Mechanics won't be able to help unless it's doing it when in their hands. Someone recently told me that when you first turn the key and the dash lights come on, check to see if the "check engine" light is on. If not, try to start it. If it just cranks, that's a sign it has something to do with the PCM or connections.
Doubtful, but possible.
You're gonna just throw more parts at it until you eventually find it.
Maybe you ought to just get it to a trusted shop. They could save you money.
A good mechanic ought to have some ideas.
I do have fuel at the (? shrader valve) the one that looks like a tire valve I am not sure of the term, I pushed the valve in and fuel did come out of it, it shot out about 6" was not real high pressure thanks for the help, this explorer belongs to my son thats in the army and is being kept at my house untill he returns, I wish I could get it to run as good as my ranger.
Have you considered the crankshaft position sensor? I'm not sure if you would still get any spark if the sensor was bad. Perhaps someone else can comment.

My next stepwould be to scan it with a scanner to see if there are codes (DTC stored)
What sw did you chk under the dash? fuel inertia sw???
You didn't squirt starter fluid on the maf sensor???
If you have good fuel pressure.
The TPS(throttle position sensor) sensor might have went bad, they usually don't go like this but who knows
Your son didn't have a anti theft device in the car did he?
The tps is on the throttle body. Black switch looking thing with connectors with 3 wires going into it opposit the throttle plate shaft.
to do this you need a volt meter .
Somewhere on here is a picture with a test procedure.Let me see if I can find it.

thanks rich, I have a fluck volt meter so i can do a test. do you think it would be a good idea to check the plugs for fuel since I am getting fuel to the schrader valve?
Can't find a picture for you,you really need a manual.did you find the tps sensor?
maybe try playing with the wires or loosenig the screws.putting it back on.
