Hey guys I'm a recent owner of a 96 350 psd. I'm currently working through getting this truck back to proper working order. One thing I have noticed is that every 5 or 6 start ups the starter will screech instead of turning over the engine. I'm not so sure screech is the best definition but if someone has had this issue I'm sure they will recognize what I mean. if I wait a minute and let the truck run through it's wait to start cycle a time or two, it will crank up. Anyone have this issue? I did a quick search but didn't find anything similar.
It could also be that the teeth on the starter gear are worn or stripped. Also take a look at the teeth on the flywheel or flexplate. You will have to get under the truck and remove the inspection cover to do this, but if there are a few missing teeth on the flexplate/flywheel the starter will "grind" whenever the engine happens to stop with those gears at the point where the starter would engage them to get the truck started. hopefully it is something simple, but these are a couple other things for you to take a look at while you're under there.
From your description, my guess would be that the starter over-run clutch (behind bendix gear) is on the way out.
This would be my guess also. Or it may be sticky in side, and not letting the ***** lock the over ride clutch once in a while. If the flywheel teeth are missing, usually the starter won't engauge untill the engine is rotated a few degrees to get good teeth in position for the starter gear to grab. I'm betting a new bendix is in your future.
Hmm. I wonder if you are getting an insufficient amount of juice for the starter while the glow plugs are still doing their thing. Could it be weak batteries causing this?
