Does anyone know what piston slap sounds like and under what conditions it is most likely to happen?I thought it was engine ping not sure anymore Ihave replaced rotor, dist.cap plugs wires,I even went with colder plugs didn't make a difference,Ialso tried premium fuel.Any information will be greatfull don't know what to look at now.

First thing that jumped in my head was a cracked and/or loose exhaust manifold. This will give you a ticking or pinging like sound. Can you give us a better description of the sound and the conditions it occurs in?
Timing is controlled by the PCM which can be vary it by +/- 3 degrees, but you should also be able to simply retard it manually. The computer reads the knock sensor, MAF/TPS, and O2 sensor to control timing. Does the engine show any codes? If you haven't had it hooked up to a scanner that should be your first step.
Do some checks and try to put together a better case history, it's pretty hard to help you beyond what I've suggested with the info you've supplied.
if the truck is eec-iv controled you can set the timing. Just disconnect the spout connector and set it. You may have to locate the engine at top dead center and install a timing strip around the harmonic balancer though. The spout connector is a little plug thing that is hanging off the Thick Film Ignition module wiring harness. The TFI is located on the side of the distributer.
Both exhaust manifolds were changed about a year ago because one cracked and the other rusted enough to leak around the edge.I have a code scanner no codes had one was the o2 sensor nothing else.It seems that it makes most of the noise when it is under load on a grade or steep hill, once it shifts down most of it goes away. When I cruise on the highway no noise at all.
I'm telling you its definetly the timing. No doubt about it.
If you want to be absolutely sure its the timing before you screw with it. Go to an auto parts store and buy some of that 108 octane and put in you tank. I guarantee it will stop pinging and if it does your timing is too advanced.
Well Warmdye it was a good try Ihave tried all kinds of timing changes it got a little better but still had ping not as loud but still there. The trouble is if I back off the timing it does not idle good so I set it back to factory setting.I,ll keep searching to see what comes up,something will sooner or later. thanks for the help
