I think I know, but I have never had anyone identify pinging on a running engine. Are there any known sources on the web for hearing a recording of pinging?
I don't know of any sound clips or anything like that, but it kind of sounds like shaking a few nuts and bolts around in a coffee can. It usually shows up when the engine is under load.
Same as above posts, however if the egr plate gets a little restricted with carbon, the 351M will ping like there's no tomorrow. At least I know of one that will....
Haha, that explains the noise I've been hearing from my truck forever, always heard it, but never thought to ask. Sounds like there's little bits of metal or sand flying around in my carb. Good to know, have to mess with my timing anyways, but good to know that's what that sound is...
Sounds like a diesel engine idling.
Hey firston, my 351M started pinging during the last few thousand miles... I never gave thought to the EGR being plugged up! Totally slipped my mind since it has no computer to give me an error code, and I have been working on so many EEC IV and OBD II vehicles lately. I had just figured the 540,000 mile timing chain was the culprit!
Thanks for triggering my brain fart! lol
