Just some comments for you to consider.
1. Titles make all the difference. The title No Spark might draw some in, but it so general, that it may got passed on. The more info and specific you can give in a title, the more responses you will get.
2. Search more relevant forums when you have a non-factory setup. You are asking DS II questions in a forum that never had them, every truck in that forum came factory stock with points. Not saying that members there will not know anything about the DSII systems, but it is a higher chance. The 460 wasn't common even in the 73-79 trucks, and not in the 4x4 hardly at all. However, many get refit with them. Don't be so specific when searching for info. I noticed with the timing question you were all hung up on specific applications. Doesn't matter 4x4 or 4x2 when setting timing, all that matters is the motor itself and auto or manual. You could have found the info in the early 80's as well. I may be mistaken, but I believe factory setups were all auto trans in the trucks that did have a 460 until into the 80's.
3. Conversions like that have a whole long list of possible issues. It is nearly impossible to diagnose effectively without knowing details. Since the truck never had a DSII to start with, it could have been horribly cobbled in, or could have a quality job with old parts, there is no way to know when we are not there. You must be our eyes and ears to be effective to diagnose. That is likely the reason for the HEI conversion comment.
I think you all are a bunch of snobs so full of yourself and self importance, that the whole lot of you should be banned!
(The above comment was meant as a joke)
I agree that some forums do have better participation than others. And the knowledge from the regular guys that frequent those forums varies too. I don't hit the 7.3 PSD forums like I used to, and when I do, it is usually to read more than to post. I'm certainly not one of the most knowledgeable ones on those forums. The fact that most of the guys with a PSD use their trucks regularly probably has something to do with the knowledge and quick response time they have. As the OP stated, most folks with a 40 year old truck don't use them on a daily basis. It is most likely a toy or hobby for them. Nothing wrong with that at all. But a vehicle that gets used daily will take precedence over a hobby.

I agree, I will be more specific next time.

Yes, I realized this after I made the post and I believe I mentioned in the OP of this thread. In fact I think I mentioned that in the bumpside forum. As for the timing question, I was only try to give all the information had, not knowing what all was relevant. IIRC, when setting the timing with auto trans and A/C, I think the vehicle has to be in drive and the A/C on, but I could be mistaken.

I did want to avoid buying a "cobbled together" truck (my term as well,) for that very reason. This one seems to have been done well. I passed one up a few years ago after making a down payment and renting a car to drive from Florida to Tennessee to buy it. It was a terrible job and even though I lost my down payment, I believe I am better off for it.
I suggest for real entertainment you go to the FE forums and suggest that running three 2bbl carbs on your FE makes you less of a man than running two 4bbl carbs, or that it's proof you're a smart guy if you run a single 4bbl, but that you must be a lunatic if you run a Holley 500 cfm 2bbl.....
I've been a member here for a number of years. Not a lot of posts, but I've been here. I joined up because I have wanted a bumpside for over thirty years and I thought, at the time, that I was just about to buy one. In 2008 I bought a '95 PSD and found myself in need of tech advice. Every time I Googled a question FTE had the highest ranking results. So I began spending a lot of time in the 94.5-97 7.3L PSD forums. I got excellent tech advice there, many problems solved and fixed, directed to many excellent tech pages, met some great people in the real world from there and basically learned a lot on a subject on which beforehand I was totally clueless. There is a real camraderie in the OBS PSD forum founded on a mutual love for these trucks into which I was welcomed from the very start.
About a week ago I finally got the bumpside I've always wanted -- a 1971 F250 highboy, 4WD with 4-spd, factory A/C. It also has a transplanted 460 from a 1976 donor truck along with the PS from that truck and it has PB, but not disc. The day I bought it I drove it 1100 miles home from Illinois to Texas. The truck ran great for that trip, but last Saturday I went out to start it and wouldn't start, no fire. I bought this truck to be a daily driver and I needed it on the road. (If you would like to debate the wisdom of relying on a 40-some-odd year old vehicle, let's make that a separate discussion.) I posted the problem up in the bumpside forum and in two days the only advice I got was to consider ditching my ignition for an upgraded one. I went on to fix the problem without having to "upgrade." Granted, since the motor was not even offered in 67-72 trucks that I know of, I see now that I should have posted in the Big Block V8 385 Series forum -- maybe that would have made a difference. However, that was not my experience in the PSD forum. The forum was about the truck, not it's individual components. It was a community of diesel truck lovers.
I'm not saying that anybody owes anybody anything here. I don't rely on the internet to solve my problems. It's sometimes faster and more convenient, but I still remember how to do things the old-school way. I have contemplated the differences between the two forums ever since the day I announced in the bumpside forum that I had purchased the truck and would pick it up in a week. The response was pretty lukewarm, especially compared to the very enthusiastic welcomes I received at the PSD forum four years ago. The differences in the two forum mindsets I think is that almost everyone at the PSD forum USES their trucks on a daily basis. Most of them are still work trucks, hauling equipment, hay, RV trailers -- heavy work. I think most of the bumpside guys are mainly hobbyists. When I had problems with my PSD, my questions were answered with the same sense urgency in which they were asked. Even to the point that I drove to a guy's personal shop 100 miles away and he swapped my bad turbo for an "extra" he had and helped me install it. (Thanks Rubberduck.) I was mistaken to think that I would find the same level of enthusiasm and interest for my true truck of choice. (Now the diesel guys will hate me.)
It is not my intention to offend or criticize or belittle anyone with this post. Just making some observations and voicing my conclusions. Let me add that by making a distinction between the mindsets of two groups and saying one is users and one is hobbyists, is not to say that one is any more or less knowledgeable than the other. The distinction was made to illustrate the sense of urgency with which each views a problem.

now now, the 4X4 and off road forum is not that bad!!
you just have to respect the hours of use regulations, keep the windows rolled up, doors locked, not make direct eye contact with any of the residents, and most important of all, never stop at red lights or stop signs.
you present a very good point Norton. I've been here on FTE for some time...but it surprised me when I wandered into the PSD sections after buying my truck.
FTE has always been my favorite Ford oriented forum....but hot damn if the PSD guys/gals aren't a step above. The breakdown network alone amazes me. At some point I'd like to take a road trip and stop by with some of y'all and buy you a beer/drink of choice.

or they could just quit being ***** beaters and be useful. I hate how certain areas of this site have gotten that way. I ain't perfect, but I normally don't throw down and establish dominance on stupid people without a damn good reason
the 4x4 section is pretty cool when I go looking at the builds. but ask a tech question and all the sharks are out for blood. I like to go 4x4, but it's too expensive a hobby for me so I like to look and dream. I don't know/understand many of the intricacies around some builds...so i ask a question (not just this forum is a problem about this BTW) and the responses are
there are certain sections of FTE i've written off completely. even had the settings changed so they don't even show up. just too much riff-raff and other drama seekers who'd rather call you an idiot than anything else. it's a real shame, but oh well

Yes, the break down network is such an awesome idea. The fact that it exists speaks volumes about the PSD forum. The fact that is there as an example but no other forums have implemented it for themselves speaks volumes as well.

Are you in the States? I see is says you're in Pearl Harbor so I'm assuming Hawaii. If you're ever within a few hundred miles shoot me a PM.
I don't see where people get this stuff, we always help in the offroad forum if you ask a question, might be some off topic involved as well, but it's just jokes and you always get the answer you need.
If I ever come in there y'all please be gentle with me. I've never driven 4WD in my life. I don't really plan to do any for real now but around where I live, it's a good thing to have. But as far as maintenance and driving technique, I know nothing.
