Just yesterday my truck developed a weird idle. It's not erratic or missing just noticeably louder than it was before. Especially from inside.
The truck runs great and is quieter when you hit the skinny pedal. On the highway I can't even tell anything is wrong.
There are no check engine lights at any time. I have a scangauge which is reading everything coming off the PCM as normal. I'll use the DTC reader on it today and run the injector buzz test as well.
Has anyone ever had anything like this?? I keep thinking I'm hearing things but I know how my truck is supposed to sound.
Ok no trouble codes. Just a P1111. Ran the injector buzz test. All normal. I did notice that every once in a while it will revert back to a normal idle for a little bit.
Low oil will cause sporatic surge time to time, We had an oil pressure sensor go out on his and it would cause the truck to surge, as if it were being fed a bit of fuel, I know when they get a couple quarts low this can happen as well. Not sure if this is what you are talking about, but just throwing it out there.
I'll check the oil. Edit: Just had the oil changed 1000 miles ago and after checking its still full and in decent condition. I can tell you the tach sits at 700 RPM and doesn't move. It fires right up.
I unplugged the ICP sensor and no difference so that's not it.
Didn't check any oil pressure senors yet. Where is that located??
Update: It got a lot worse sounding almost like the truck was going to fall apart at idle. But you hit the gas and it still goes away. Took it to my friend who is actually a Powerstroke Diesel Mechanic at the local Ford dealership. He took one look and listened to it. He's guessing a flywheel that's about to break. I actually have a really good aftermarket warranty so its going into the Ford dealership today.
I felt really good about all the stuff I had ruled out thanks to this site. I'll let you know what it is.
5-speed, then? I was thinking flywheel or throwout bearing.
When you drive it, cruising down the road, and you throttle down but keep the clutch engaged, do you hear/feel any clunk/clack from the transmission/flywheel area?
When you shut off the engine, does it make an extra "clack" sound just as the engine comes to a stop?
I had a downpipe put in over 2 years ago and it has never been a problem. Not saying it isn't but we'll find out. I don't feel too bad having my friend work on the truck as he's the one that Eastern WA dealers sends their Ford Diesels to when they can't figure it out.

Did you mash the pinch weld on the firewall/floor of the cab well out of the way? How much clearance did you have at the time? Just thinking if it was real close, maybe in the intervening time the cab mounts have settled just enough that it's now starting to interfere with the pipe.
I should mention its an auto trans. You know I think I misunderstood him. He probably meant the flex plate as I know the flywheel problem is only on the manuals, right? It does it in park, neutral, or any gear at 500-700 RPM. Get above that and its gone.
I sent my friend a text to check the downpipe clearance as I honestly don't remember when I had another friend put it in. Good thought, madpogue.
It literally sounds like a gas engine that has broken a rod or something. It's a freaking horrible sound. But like I said just blip the pedal and its gone.
Just reach under there (wait 'til exhaust is COLD), grab the pipe up close to where it passes between the tranny and firewall, and wiggle it around a little and see if you hear it hitting the cab.
My friend called this morning. It is in fact, the flexplate. It's totally busted. 850 bucks to replace but my aftermarket warranty will hopefully cover most of it. The warranty has already bought me a new Ford tranny, fuel pump, serp belt, and tensioner so hopefully I can get this covered too.
