Just returned from a 1,300 mi round trip to mid ohio in the diesel (01 f250 cc 4x4 w/ 61k). I noticed something was a little awry with the idle while on the road. Pulled in for some fuel and was letting it cool down before I shut it down. It was a this time I noticed the idle was loaping a little, maybe jumping from like 500-800 rpm. Its usually rock solid at 800. I could hear it too, even felt it a couple of times stuck in traffic w/o my foot on the pedal.
I just changed the oil at 60k, fuel and air filter too.
I have all ready been through two IPR valves so I suspect this, but frankly, Im not totally sure what controls the idle. Any thoughts??
IPR is injector pressure regulator, right? There is an ICP sensor too, right?
Besides this, the truck ran very well. The idle problem was not constant, and only seemed to appear when the truck was at operating temp.
Was there anything different abut the oil change? Did you switch brands, change the weight, etc. Is the oil level correct? What about the HPOP oil level?
Could be the IPR or the ICP, but since the problem started right after maintenance was performed it seems to me that examining what could have happend during the maintenance would be the best starting point
Everything was the same. Rotella T 15W40. Oil level is right on. The only different thing on the truck are the new tires, but that shouldn't be a factor.
HPOP level? Havent checked that. My next question would be how do I check that?
I wonder if I stored any codes? I didn't see the check engine light come on, but who knows. I guess I should take it to the ....shudder....dealer since its still under warranty. W/o any codes, they will think its fine. I guess I would have to ask for one of those recorder things so I can capture the event next time it happens.
On the top of the pump, towards the drivers side, there is an allen plug. Remove the plug and look inside. The oil level in the reservoir should be no more than 1" from the top.
I have had the same problem. Mine has done it for about 4 years now, but havent had any problems. It is annoying as hell. It is also more noticable and more irratic after an oil change. I now have 230,000 miles on it and have had it since it was brand new. The dealer couldn't even fix it. Or chose not too.
I work on VW and Audi for a living. So I am a little short on knowing the PSD intimatly like I know the VW's. But I have fixed a LOT of mysterious running problems that would not generate any sort of code by replacing the coolant temperature sensor. They usually would give a correct signal but the connectors would have a touch of corrosion on them that would mess up the signal to the ECM (engine control module). Another thing to give a hard look at is all the ground connections on the engine to frame. And make sure that your battery connections are bright and clean between the post and the female part of the cable. A lot of times the exterior of the cable will be good, but if you disconnect it, it's all white and corroded where it makes contact. All that can lead to a poor power supply which will throw electronics for a loop. They'll still work, just not very good.
SMB, did it do any better after you filled it up with fuel? Some of these things are notorious for air getting in the fuel. When mine gets down to about a 1/4 of a tank it idles and sounds terrible. I am going to do the mods that kwikkordead did to his this weekend.
