Since you're not sure what year the motor is, I'll assume it could be anything. Being a 351M, we will assume it's probably older then your 83 truck. It may have points, may be a DSII.
When you pulled it apart, did you see points in there? Do you see the wires coming out of the distributor going to a connector or straight to the coil? Do you have a control module mounted on the drivers side fendor with several groups of wires, all leading into connectors?

Wire goes to the coil, there is a control module on the drivers side fender, the truck originally had a 302 in it.
Which distributor you have is determined by the Calibration Code of the engine.
The distributor should have a tag on it, post its information if the tag is still there. Failing that, can you find any other letters or numbers or codes stamped/cast into it?
