The wife and I just bought our first house a couple weeks ago and we are having a slight problem with our furnace/air conditioner. Seems to be people here on FTE knowledgeable in just about everything, so I figured I would ask here before looking for an HVAC specific forum.
The furnace runs just fine, but the fan will not shut off even when the switch on the thermostat is turned to "OFF". However, when I turn on the AC, the AC unit turns on like it should but the fan in the furnace then turns off, and won't run even if I turn the fan switch on the thermostat to "ON". When I turn the AC off, the fan kicks back on and runs.
I'm thinking maybe something is wrong with the thermostat, but I'm not an HVAC expert.
I can't help you but I have a good friend who works in HVAC. We are gonna hang out tomorrow and I'll get his opinion.
That would be great, thanks!
Just to clarify, The fan runs all the time when the switch on the thermostat is set to OFF or
HEAT, doesn't matter if the fan switch is set to AUTO or ON. The fan will not run at all when set to COOL, and this also doesn't matter if the fan switch is set to AUTO or ON.
I did pick up a certain thermostat, so I will see if that solves the problem when I get home.
What is the current T-stat? Is it electronic? If so it may be programmed incorrectly. There is alot of possible probloms, will the outdoor unit run in the cool position?

Current thermostat is a digital one but not programmable, doesn't have any markings as to what brand.
The outdoor AC unit does run like it should, it's just the fan in the furnace that doesn't run when set to cool.
I'm guessing that it could be the thermostat. Does it have a battery or other power source?
If not, it could be touchy if the furnace controller wasn't designed for it. They draw power from the furnace controller, and some weren't designed to do that.
I put a digital stat on and it worked OK for a while, then it started acting up. Can't remember exactly what now, but it wasn't consistent.
No problems now that I have an old fashioned round one. (Although it's the third one. I put one in, and it gave me grief, and the first one that a good hvac guy installed also failed -- go figure).
This is a good site, but read their rules. They WILL help you out, but they make it plain that they're not a DIY forum. I've gotten good advice from them.

Some t-stats are parrameter programmable. That is why I was asking whitch one. The fan could be programmed to be opperated by the furnace in heat and not in a/c or vise versa. Can you post a pic of the t-stat?
