If you have an emergency switch on your thermostat, you need to switch it to that. We get that ice buildup on occasion.
As I understand it, that will turn off the evaporator and use an electric heat instead...or something like that.

Sounds like a heat pump.
If so, it appears that the defroster is either bad, or the thermostat/timer on the defroster has gone bad.
In either case. . . to get some heat, either switch to 'Emergency Heat' (all electric heating coils) or, if you can manually switch the defroster on, do that.
Years ago, when I had a heat pump, I had to change the defrost cycle from every 90 miutes, to every 30 minutes. My condensor unit (outside unit) was doing the same thing. . . . ice.
Switched to oil furnace. Man. . . nothing like being warm in the winter!
