My old truck has OLD window tint and I would like it GONE !!! I thought my eyes were going bad till I rolled the window down, wow I can see !!!! The worst part is that it has faded over the years... Any good suggestions for removing it, short of a hammer it is on the side glass only, even the small glass on the X-cab area. The tint shop was going to charge an extra $100 to remove it, so now I have another project ... Here in Nevada we can legally tint everything but the windshield. All help is appreciated ... Dave
If you mean it has tinted paper, your average sticker remover (you know? the little ones that use the old style shaving blades) will work great to remove both the paper and the glue, but be warned, it's a boring and time-consuming job. Use a sponge with soapy water to help soften the glue and remove any residue.
I have been in the same situation. I just used a scrapper with a new razor blade and changed the blade regularly so I didn't risk scratching the glass. For a solution I just used soap and water mixed in a spray bottle. It came off fairly easily but for the sticky bits of adhesive I used lots of the solution with fine steel wool and gentle pressure so as not to scratch the glass.
Now I like doing things the easier way so I pulled the glass out of the vehicle. It also keeps the mess out of the truck. I have done a ton of work on my truck and have had things apart many times so it only took me about 30-40 minutes to pull both peices of glass from both of the doors and the side glass in the back, but it made it much easier to work on. Weather was not an issue as I have a garage.
They are all very easy to pull and the guys at the tint shop loved me. It was a whole lot easier for me to clean the old tint off with the glass not in the vehicle and it was a whole lot easier for them to tint with it on a bench. They claimed it was their first time having someone do that and the bonus was they knocked $100.00 off the cost of the tinting because it took them half the time.
You just need to prearrange your time at the tint shop and I spoke with them first about the possible lower price if I did it this way.
It was worth the effort but you must obviously be very carefully when reinstalling the glass, partcularly the roll dpwn windows. The others are no problem.
Thanks Gary, on the back side glass, do you pull it from the outside or inside and what about re-sealing it... we don't get much rain or snow here, but I would like it all to stay outside. Is the back, side windows 1 piece per side or 2 ??? mmmm I'm wondering if it is 1 piece, will later model outer window trim (without the bar) fit in the same opening ... Research time.
I was going to pull the door panels to install my new armrests and door speakers , sounds like a good time to do it all. Gotta think on this one MMM
Geeze, now I have more questions than answers. ... Thanks, Dave
On my 1992 I had to pull the plastic trim on the inside and then that exposed I believe 6 or 8 small bolts that had to be removed. Then just push it out from the inside.
Ford sealed it with a very gooy black sealant and if it is a hot day it will get onto your truck so be carefull to keep the mess on the outside and varsol cleaned it up. Mine had such a large quantity of this stuff on it that I left it on the frame and was able to reuse it. The windows have been back in for three years now with lots of ice, snow and rain and no leaks.
I am sure you could buy it from most auto glass places if you needed to. Don't use silicone or you will have a real battle getting out if you needed to later on.
I am not sure of the newer single pane like mine would fit into the older double style like yours.
The rear side glass is a single piece with a plastic cover over it. Rear glass from the next gen trucks will NOT fit, the glass is slightly taller on the 92-97 trucks. Most parts houses and even big box stores carry a window tint remover. It works wonders on removing the left over glue. Just spray some on and scrub off, no razor blading or steel wool needed.
Nice to find another truck driver on here... My last truck was a 06, Pete 379 42" sleeper, 475 Kitty , 10 sp and 370's I retired after that one ... 10-4 driver !!!!
Dave
I bought the truck and grain trailer in '05. started hauling grain to the cities, good friend of mine had a walking floor so I put a wet kit on it and hauled wood chips for him over winter and some in summer. after I moved out west 2 years ago I got a full time job, now the truck just sits, waiting for paint and a work over....its got the mighty B model . I'll use it to pull a step deck and haul my dads and my tractors to a few shows and hit up some truck shows with it too.
On a hot day, I have started one corner of the film and peeled it off, almost complete. Having to scrape it off in 1" strips would sure be a booger. Do it on one of theose days when you leave the truck sealed up and it's toasty in there. The adhesive gets soft.

Well I certainly have as many HOT days as I need, we run around 95* + + here this time of year till OH ... the second week of September or so. It is going to be 96* & 97* the next two days so I'll give it a try. You are right razor scraping 1" at a time SUCKS !!! ... Time to get HOT
Well, I finished up my window tint project... Sat. I tried a bunch of different ways to clean them and none impressed me to the MAX. Today I tried the "Cheggy" method and let her cook took the razor and started across the top... kept it wet with a combo of Windex, Dawn dish soap... (1/2 tsp), and a 1/2 cup ammonia... it came off in almost 1 sheet with minor scraper work. This method worked the BEST for me... and most of the "glue" went with the film. sat I spent 2hrs on one door and today 45 min. on the other door and side windows. Thanks Cheggy, great advice !!! Dave
