Unhappy Shaking

Hello to all.

I have an '87 Ranger XLT, 2 wheel drive, 2.9 Liter V6, with around 116,000 miles. Within the last month it has started vibrating when slowing from a speed over 40mph. Recent repairs include: new brake shoes and pads, new tires (no alignment). And the transmission was rebuilt less than 5 years ago. Any suggestions would be of great help. If these are do-it-yourself suggestions please keep in mind that I'm just a beginner trying to do my own mechanic work, but am not afraid to tear things apart.

Thanks,
Jeremy

It sounds like your brake rotors are warped, and need to be turned, or replaced. If they are thin, and close to the minimum
thickness, they should be replaced....

Good luck, and welcome to FTE!!!!

I forgot to mention this before. But I makes no difference whether I apply the brakes or just let it coast. Would this still indicate that the roaters? When I had the brakes replaced I was told that the roaters were starting to get thin but I should get at least another 30,000 miles out of them.

Thanks for the reply.

No, the rotors being warped WILL NOT cause a vibration while
coasting, only with the brakes applied....

Sorry, one more question I forgot to put in my previous reply. Again, if it is the rotors (I realize I spelled it wrong before) how difficult is it to replace those on your own? I realize I would probably need to have a mechanic adjust the brake pads when I was done, but if I could do the majority of the work I would like to. To save money and for the learning experience.

Thanks again.

Rotors are easy to do, you should get a repair manual to help. All you have to do is pull the tire off, punch the pins out that hold the caliper on, remove caliper then remove the spindle nut and remove the rotor. Replace the brake pads and wheel bearings while your doing it and make sure you pack the bearings with grease.

Question Shaking

Is there anyone that has any idea as to what this problem could be? If not, could someone at least give an opinion as to whether they think this is a serious problem or not.

If it helps, here's probably a better description of the shaking. It feels like going over the speed bumps that are before a stop sign. Like I said before it doesn't matter whether I use the brakes or just let it coast. And the vibrations stop at around 40 mph and below or at least they get so soft that they can't be felt.

Thanks to anyone that can offer any advice.

Have the tires been balanced?

The tires should have been balanced when I got them. I'm going to try to find my receipt to make sure though. And I have started noticeing that the vibration does continue below 40 mph.

Thanks.

Does the vibration happen at a constant driving speed?

When the vibration happens, does it feel like its coming from the steering column or the floor of the truck?

When you put the truck in gear, do you get a loud "clunk" right as you apply the gas?

When you put your front brakes on, did you check the wheel bearings for play by wiggleing the rotor assembly when it was on the truck while raised up?

No, it doesn't happen at a constant driving speed or while accelerating. I may be wrong, but at least I don't notice the vibrating.

I checked, it does seem to be coming from the steering column. To check this I went driving and would briefly let go of the steering wheel (a stupid thing to do, I know). I could still hear and feel the vibration, but when I grabbed the steering wheel it felt much stronger.

I didn't replace the brakes myself, I had a shop do it. So, I couldn't tell you if they checked that or not.

I sounds like you might know what's wrong, I really hope so.

Thanks Super.

Well I'm not sure exactly what it could be but these are what I'd check.

1st

I'd take my truck in for a Rotate and Balance (not just a rotation) on all 4 tires, when you take it in they should be able to find any broken belts in the tires if there are any. You should rotate and balance your tires every 6k to 7.5k miles reguardless if they were balanced when new.

If problem still persists, I'd look for play in the steering system, specfically a worn tie rod, or joints. and replace if necessary.

Shot Front Wheel bearings may also be a remote possibility, but usually they are associated with squeals, and or hard pulling to one side when driving.

It may be worth it to just take the truck in and have a Rotate and Balance done, as well as a front end alignment (this way if there is bad parts they'll catch it, make sure to ask them to check though). On a 2wd truck the alignment and r+b shouldn't set you back much.

my .02

Good Luck!
