hot starter

The headers on my sons 73 had to be dimpled to clear the starter but they still touch and after driving a little and turning it off the starter just wont go. I've ordered some of the pipe wrap and a starter wrap but wondered what any of you have done for this problem.

MORE dimple....

Pretty bad they can't make this stuff fit like it's suppose to.

I spend most the afternoon "making" mine fit. Heat/bang, heat/bang til I could get my finger inbetween everything. It's been 1 1/2 yrs and no issues yet(cross my fingers).

Good luck

What brand headers are you running? I've had three sets of Hedmans on my '72 and none of them has touched the starter. If you're happy with your headers than you can go for one of the high-torque mini-starters that will give you plenty of clearance although they aren't cheap. They do turn the motor better. I would think real hard before you wrap your headers because doing so voids most of the manufacturers' warranties; there's a good reason for this. I wrapped my first set of Hedmans, trying to cut down on underhood heat, and ended up blowing a tube in less than a year. The header wrap lets moisture accumulate and accelerates the rusting process, plus the tubes get hotter which ages the steel faster too. The starter blanket is always a good idea.

We got a little clearance with a whole lot of work and installed both the starter cover and a pipe wrap and it's still the same. Who has used a mini starter and how does it work?

there are several makers. I run a Jeg's pro-starter.. .They are all about $150-200. They are designed to hanlde the heat and provide a bit more starting torque for high-compression motors.
