I have a 94 F150 with the I6. She has always started hard when it was cold but fine when it was warm. Drove it all day yesterday started everytime when i was out of town. I got her back home and now she wont start. It just cranks over and over, sputter at first. If I cycle the fuel pump 2 or 3 times it seems to sputter a little more. It has started twice when I just randomly came back to it later it firerd right up. I hooked up my code reader and all it did when I hit test was cycle the fuel pump. I know my o2 sensor wire is burned in two so shouldnt there be some kind of code? I just dont know what would make it start doing this. Apart from the first crank it dont even try to run. Any one who has experianced the same or knows whats goin on your input is greatly apriciated!
Ok so I had a buddy come help me push it in the garage I pulled plug #1 it was loose for one only hand tight aparently the previous owner didnt tighten it. Anyways the plug had spark cranked it for a few seconds and it was good, tried it a second time and the motor fired right up on the other 5 cyls. Reinstalled plug and it fired right up 3 times in a row. I put stuff away and shut the hood took maybe 3 mins. Tried again, just a sputter at first then a dead crank. Now it wont start at all again! Fuel pumps pressure up so I know it has to be getting fuel. What else could be goin on here?
TFI module or Crank sensor would be the most likely suspect; if it's a distributor ignition, you'll also want to check your internal parts (stator, pickup) out, if it's distributorless, the coil packs should be checked. You could also have plugs/wires going bad.
Ok so now I replaced the plugs, wires and coil. The prong on the coil was corroded and half missing so I think great, theres my problem. After replacing all that the truck started fine all evening and all night. Prolly at least ten time back to back. Go out this mornig, sputter to a dead crank again! This is extreamly frustrating!
After trying it again 30 mins later it started, but hard, ran for 20 seconds or so and shut off. Started it back up, ran maybe 30 seconds and shut off, started it again now its running. This thing is driving me crazy and now Im afraid to shut it off anywhere I go. What is the most likely cause for this?
ok got my code reader to pull codes here goes
116-coolant temp higher or lower than expected
10-separation code
117-engine coolant temp sensor below minimum voltage
172-o2 sensor lean
556-fuel pump rely primary circuit fault
The o2 sensor is new so that code should disapear if i unhook the batery.
Could the fuel pump rely be my problem? The pumps pressure up fine and are pumping while and after I am cranking it when it wont start. The truck runs great when it does start. No sputter, hesitation nothing, runs fantastic. Just dont always want to start anymore. Is that rely something that could affect starting, and let it start occasionally?
I went ahead and replaced the relay. It started several times consecutivly. Cooled down still started. Pulled it in shop let it set like an hour. Back to dead crank. It still seems that if I cycle the switch 2 or 3 times it sputters more at first. I accually got it started once by cycling three times and pumping the throttle when I crank it, it then sputters to life, though this will not work everytime. When it does start it starts right up and runs great so it cant be anything mechanical. This problem is driving me crazy!!
Have you ruled out your stator as a problem? I had similar things happening with a bad stator once (would start and run fine, then when I would shut it off it randomly wouldn't start).
there is a cylinder shaped part you'll find should be right on top of where the plumbing where the air intake box connects to the intake you might want to check due to the separation code
I just found the cause of an intermittant "random miss" that was getting worse with time in my '94.
After trading out coils, relays, cleaning ground connectors and on and on and on............
It turned out to be the ignition switch------The electrical part under the steering column (not the key part).
I was real lucky to find it.
I have a small in and out thermometer wired in to the "run" circuit and it did a "Beep" when I put the truck in park. That was my clue.
There is a run circuit in the ignition switch that might not be functioning correctly for you.
I opened mine up and could see where the contacts weren't making good connections in the "run circuit".
Also worth checking.......... I had a tank selector switch go out one night that stranded me. It (my truck) was throwing "lean codes" before it finally gave up the ghost.
Good luck.
It appears you have an electrical "something" going on there.
