I removed the column shifter from my 1975 GM column to paint the column. When I put the shifter back in I apparently did something wrong because now the shifter rattles back and forth.
I know there is some kind of spring in the column that pushes against the shifter to prevent that but I don't see one. Could the spring have fallen out or down in the column somewhere? How do I fix it?
I really hate to buy another column since this one is permanently installed. Any comments appreciated....the last time I took a GM column apart it was never the same and went into a junk pile! Don't want a repeat!
Well, the post above was NOT the end of the story. I installed a new spring but it too disappeared into the column so the information on the El Camino site about it being a 5 minute job is manure.
I was seriously considering finding another column but decided I had nothing to lose by disassembling the column so I did. I had to completely disassemble the column to get the spring out and found two of them in there when I got it apart. It took me most of a day to figure out how it came apart and get it back together so that everything still worked. There is very little technical information out there as to how the columns come apart.
So, if you have to remove your column shifter lever be very carefull that the tension spring doesn't fall down into the column. I can ruin your day...
