I've got stock wiper arms and blades on my F1. At 60 and above they start to float on the windshield from the wind getting under them. My wife and I have commented that 60 to 75 mph is alittle faster than the truck was designed to run, but still. Has anyone found a better wiper arm and blade that stays on the glass at highway speeds?
Your family physician may recommend less fiber in your diet.
Seriously, the spring tension does deteriorate over time.I have an old Anco dial indicator you place between the blade and the windshield,it measures pressure exerted by the arm.Below a certain level, replace the arm.
You probably need new wiper arms. Those springs wear out after 50 years or so. Some of them can be changed. If you happen across a similar sized wiper arm with a better spring in a swap meet you might try changing the spring if you're a tightwad like me instead of buying new wiper arms...
OH ROSS! That just wasn't right! But all the guys in the office thought it was funny...
Vern, I may try new arms. I try not to drive the truck in the rain, but it would be a pain to put the wipers on and off when it does. If the springs were alittle stronger it would probably solve my problem.
I have brand new wiper arms and I have the same problem. Not only do they 'fly' at cruising speeds, but they don't work well at all in the rain (isn't that the purpose of wipers?).
I try not to drive it the rain, but sometimes you get caught in it. I'm driving a couple a hundred miles today to the F100 Super Nat's in Pigeon Forge, and there's a good chance I'll get rained on some on the way there or on the way back.
Not sure what to do about it. It's fairly low on my priority list, but I may see if I can source some stronger springs.
I personally have not seen them for a few years, but you used to be able to get "wind deflectors" that attached to the wiper arms, that supposeably stopped the blade from lifting at high speed.
They looked like little spoilers on the arm.
I'm still looking for a pic of them.
I have not had good luck with Rain-X on any of my vehicles. It creates a film on the windshield that makes it almost impossible to see at night when meeting other cars.
Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but that has been my experience.
