Broken column shifter?

Ok guys, my column shifter quit working completely this weekend. It just floats back and forth freely. None of the linkage moves at all at the end of the shaft under the hood. Could someone give me an idea of what may need to be replaced inside the column? I have never had one apart but am going to try and tackle it this week. I need my truck!

'77 F250 4x4, auto.

You have to remove the column.

Get started.

More than likely the shifter tube has rounded out the linkage lever at the bottom of the column

Part Number 7302 or 7303..they are the same part

shown here.

Bill will know.

The good thing is they were used on so many vehicles they will be plentiful in the wreckers as they were used in car/trucks non-tilt and tilt.

Before you start pulling everything apart consider the shift colunm that the shifter goes into. It's common for them to break inside and lose the connection to the linkage. The steering wheel still has to come off.

Mil1ion, my 3524 is completely wallered out, is it safe to assume that I need to replace the entire shaft? And based on my symptoms and other threads it appears that I'll need to replace: (guessing names)

7A247 - Nuetral Safety Switch
7B097 - Nuetral pin
7302 - Fork
7341 - Nut/Bolt
3C773-Plastic thing.

Does this sound practical?

So will I be able to just undo the nuts off the end of the shaft (3524), undo some bolts holding the column shaft at the firewall and unplug some wiring and slide the whole thing out and work from the bottom end? Could I weld up the end of the shaft? Or am I going to have to start at the wheel and work my way down??? Advice appreciated.

Nope can't be done without complete removal of the column lay it on a bench and dismantle it.

There are 3 hold pieces that keep everything together

The column assembly is spring loaded.

NOTE: On the A/T column the part # 7302

Okay Update:

I got totally confused with all these shifter threads going right now.

I just checked my 75 column and it appears that the bottom shaft keeper is held on with 2 allen set screws, but I doubtthis hold the shaft inards together.

I'm going to have to check the book to find out more.

My photo above applies to some 77's and then 78's/79's

I'll be back.

I tore into it last night and it appears that beartracks was correct! The shift collar has broken into two pieces. At least I won't have to pull the whole column. Now to find the parts.
