Turn crankshaft until cylinder #1 is a TDC on the compression
stroke. You will see the TDC mark on the crankshaft damper.
To check for the compression stroke on cylinder #1, remove the
valve cover, and check to see if the intake and exhaust valves
for cylinder #1 are both CLOSED. If cylinder #1 is at TDC on the
exhaust stroke, both intake and exhaust valves will be OPEN.

After being sure you are on the correct stroke, install the distributor with the rotor facing towards the cylinder #1 post in
the distributor cap.

Good luck!!!

And, welcome to FTE!!!!!

Easier than pulling the valve cover is just stick your finger in #1 spark plug hole and bump the engine over until you feel air blowing out the hole. Then bring it up to TDC.
#1 plug wire will be toward the master cylinder. Might also be indicated on the cap.
