i just finished the installation of the new distributor and before cutting the new wires to length i was checking and notice that the wires are not as the shop manual diagram.
the ignition order is fine 15426378 , just the position is different.
i have the #5 to the front instead of #3 as the illustration shows.
my question is how is the best way for routing the wires and how is the best way to move the distributor without messing to much the ignition timing.
To change the position, you do have to remove the distributor, and re-insert with the rotor shaft re-positioned, and of course the timing has to be re-done.
The key to dist location, is to make sure that over the range of timing adjustment, your vacuum canister doesn't bang up against anything. If that's OK as is, I'd leave it as is, and cut your wires to fit.
Besides, you don't want the wires too tight, plus if you ever wind up with the dist in a different postion, you can probably swap long and short wires around and everything will be OK.
I'd advise you to get a spray can of silicone lube. Fighting with those boots when fitting to the wires can be frustrating otherwise.
And wires for cylinders 7 and 8 should be as far apart as possible, so make allowance for that when cutting lenghts.
Don't bother rearranging everything by pulling the distributor. Long ago I gave up caring where #1 was "supposed" to be, and just plopping the distributor in and starting from #1 and working counter-clockwise through the firing order. On Fords, that is. For other makes where the distributor turns the WRONG WAY I go the other way
As long as you have enough room to set the initial timing correctly, it doesn't matter which way is which.
