Time to replace upper/ lower ball joints have and idea how to but picks would be great.do i have to remove the 1/2 shaft,or can i just move it to the side after the knucle has been removed to get to the lower ball joint. also dose the struit have to be removed to replace the upper control arm . 2004 f150 5.4l 4x4 106000 miles. Thanks
Last I checked the ball joints aren't replaceable on their own; you have to replace the entire upper control arm. Check around on that though. Let me know if you need the procedure for the upper control arm job. I may be able to get you a procedure with pics.
Mine are still original after almost 190k. Not to say they shouldn't be replaced but with things like that I usually wait til they start failing before doing anything with them. As for a regular PM schedule? I have no clue. Are yours going bad?
No, I just got my truck, an '08 with 110k miles, and it is pretty flawless mechanically. I was just curious since with 110k miles this truck still drives like new.
The suspension and steering systems are pretty solid. I've had no issues outside of having to replace some 4wd components (read: hubs). Outside of the well documented engine problems I can't really complain. Even with all the miles mine still rides like it's on rails.

I got lowers from Rock Auto. Moogs for about $21 a piece. There's a discount promo code in the sponsors' forum.
I would always replace suspension components in pairs.
