Just gettin' things ready!

Went by a muffler shop yesterday and got a scrap piece of 4" exhaust(they gave it to me). Took it to work and put it on the wire wheel to clean it up a bit. Then took it to the parts washer to clean all the carbon from the inside. Then cut 2 pieces, one at 4" the other at 3". Filed down edges, then wire wheeled 'em some more. Gonna polish them up a little more then scuff up the ends. Then on Monday my plan is to install my homemade 6637 kit and do the CCV mod! The best part is, the only money spent was the cost of the filter and the 3/4" hose connector!

I always find it more rewarding to build stuff on my own. Not always cheaper, but way better IMO.

Finally had the time to do my 6637 intake and CCV delete today!. It went well, I like how the aluminum adapters I made look. The sound in the cab doesn't really seem any different though. I do notice a "whoosh" sound coming from the filter when I decelerate. Is that normal?
Also, have a concern about the filter, it rests right next to the fender and you can see a little bit of it when the hood is closed through the gap. Won't water seep in through that gap when it rains or when I wash it?
I could shorten up the 4" aluminum adapter so the filter sits in a little more? Whaddya think?

I'll post some pics of the install when I put 'em on the computer

The woosh sound is the wastegate opening. Normal sound when you install an intake like that.

The hood should protect the filter for the most part. I would check it at first and see if you notice any moisture there.

Ken, the woosh is not the wastegate opening. It's the excess boost the turbo is making reversing flow and wooshing out of the filter after the trans shifts or you get off the pedal quick. When the RPM go down, the engine can't use all the boost still in the system, so it has to go somewhere. No way to hear the wastegate opening because it's in the exhaust housing.

Ok Rick, is that something I should be concerned with? Is it a big deal?

BTW, the license plate looks good! Thanks again Rick!

When the wastegate opens it unloads the turbine wheel which slows down the compressor wheel. That is why the air sound is heard. I realize you cant actually hear the WG opening. But that is the effect of it opening. The charged air has nowhere to go when the demand is not there. It is heard out the intake when an open intake is used.

Correct. You can just hear it now. When I installed my intake, I towed the next day. Getting on the freeway I was pulling hard and let off once I merged. I just about pulled over when I heard it for the first time. It is startling when you are not used to it.

Its not the wastegate... Wastegate opens from too much drive pressure... Not going to have too much drive pressure when you lift... Its not a blow off valve.

You will never hear anything from the wastegate on a factory 7.3 turbo...
