I have bought a 6637 Filter and a 4" 45 degree elbow. Last night I took off my air filter box, and got measurements to cut the 4" 45 degree elbow.
My truck is a '97 F-350 7.3 Crew Cab 4x4 long box.
My fenderwell or wheel well has insulation on it(padding or something), do you guys remove this? There are a couple spots where it is falling apart and I am wondering about it getting onto the filter, plugging the filter faster than I want... I have used my shop vac and cleaned the area, there is not any loose particles, dust dirt, etc. Just a thought I had.
Also does anyone have a dimension for this 4" 45 degree elbow - how much I need to cut off or what the remaining dimensions are? I measured and remeasured, checked and checked again, but I need to have this cut at work(truck is at home). Cutting it too short is not a good option...
I also need to stop at the hardware store to get a 4" clamp.
What do I do with that stock air box? Put it on a shelf and in 3 years wonder why I still have it?
Toss the stocker in the trash, I tried to sell my K&N and i couldn't give the thing away. As far as dimensions. I'm not sure, mine came all cut. But if you cut it longer than you need then you can put that black tube around it and call it good till you can make a better cut. As far as the insulation. I would leave it but put something under the filter, like a small piece of wood or something so that the mesh on the filter isnt scratching the insulation. Thats the only way it will plug up the filter. If it isnt rubbing on it, then you shouldn't have any problems. The Tymar kit i have came with a filter stand that strapped to the filter so the air could get it from every side.
As for the padding. I have that on mine as well. A lot of guys weld in some angle iron or something for the filter to sit on, i'm to lazy to do this, so mine sits on the padding, and it gets stuck in the filter, but no big deal, there is so much surface area, you dont have to worry about it. I just knock it out every time i take the filter outa the truck.
They say you can sell the stock box on ebay for 40-60 dollars, but i just threw mine in the old parts pile.
Thanks guys, I plan to error in the "long" direction. I was also thinking about a piece of steel or plywood under the filter. And I'll save shelf space and store the intake in the round barrel!
Next mod will be the down pipe. But not for a while, my truck funds are next to non-exisitant... The Resistor Mods have caught my interest...
Does Clay's down pipe eliminate the cat? Certainly priced much better than the one for my wife's '03 Grand Prix.... Hmmm, I certainly cringe every time I look at the down pipe.
Ya, i'd look into the 10k mod if you aren't going to be getting a chip anytime soon. Its simple. You can look at Talyns or this one is one that many people follow. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/6...on-my-10k.html
Also, if your good with a soldering iron, then look into the 140v IDM mod.
OK, pretend I am partially BLIND. Where is this ICP located on my '97? And the IDM? I think the IDM is on the left fender just under the spring hinge for hood.
yes, IDM is on the drivers side fender. and ICP is on the drivers side of the engine, next to the fuel pressure regulator with three wires going into it. Check the link i posted. Its in one of the pictures.
I recommend you to get some gauges FIRST of the mods.
At the very least get an Exhaust gas temperature gauge to monitor that. but for your question as if you need to wait, I would say you dont have to wait to do it after the downpipe. If you feel comfortable modding your idm then go for it. there are step by step instructions on this site to help you. Just dont screw up cuz then it gets costly. I would definitely do the 10k mod whenever. I think you will see a good difference there. But most people on here recommend gauges first. It is important to keep an eye on things.

Where do I get that T-bolt Clamp? Auto parts store? Home Depot? Elsewhere? My elbow is cut painted and ready to install. I work my second job tonight and hopefully tomorrow morning I will install and be driving it!
