She's gone from Suck to Blow!

ok...
my lil beast is deffinately deader than i can afford to tear into right now... anybody care to speculate ?

82 f150 sc short bed 4x4 351W ripped out the 2bbs intake and dropped a 4v and an old motorcraft that took the guys a while to find. was having electrical issues, blew ignition control module. blew cruise control amplifier. replaced both and the truck woke up like NEVER before. it suddenly knew what to do with the 4v and new carb. but 200 miles into driving what seemed like a new truck... i have a hellacious backfire at about 60mph.... 4th gear on a borg warner t18 so im at like 2600... and with gas pedal in or out there wasnt much difference in the sound of suction into the intake while it was slowing to a halt.
everything seems to have power... she cranks... everything else seems to be working fine... just no fire up.

on a whim i tried to manually choke the carb with my paw and whaddaya know... i have hardly any suction... and in some points of the crank i even get backpressure...
so... yah... she's gone from suck to blow.

im thinking i jumped the chain. but i just replaced the set like less than 2k ago when i went thru the bottom end.

no oil leaking anywhere... cant see any cracks..

scared to crack it open till i get some more scratch freed up... have to focus on the 2000 for now. which i am still waiting on. (so yah... im stuck at the house with no wheels unless moma says its important enough to take her fusion lol)

having withdrawals
need to drive my truck.

First off what is your timing set at,and did it slip on you? (i.e. forget to tighten thehold down clamp on the distributor?) Also I had an issue, make sure the number 1 plug wire is on #1on the cap.

timing was set by the book. distributor is tight and non adjustable. have not started tearing into it because i cant afford parts right now and dont want her sitting exposed.

my guess tho is timing, hopefully i didnt break my cam.

I would think it would very hard to break a cam since there's nothing at the rear that takes a lot of power. Yes, I've heard it happens, but I've never seen it.

From what you've said I'm not thinking ignition timing but valve timing. I would pull the #1 plug, have someone put their finger over the plug hole, and I would turn the engine with a breaker bar on the crank pulley bolt. Stop when the helper says there's no more air coming out, and look at the timing mark. Plus or minus a few degrees you should be sitting on TDC.

at this point im seriously considering a frankenstein diesel swap.
why not... she's gonna be my toy... and i got a welder and torch...and a forge... so i can probably make something fit.

heard of any such attempts with reports of success?

Are the rotor & camshaft still turning at all?

rotor yes, dunno about cam for sure but if the rotor is turning i would assume the cam is at least spinning where it drives the distributor.. have not pulled valve covers yet.. may do that today just for grins...

I would get the crank at TDC and see where the rotor is pointing to. Keep in mind that the crank turns 2x for every 1 turn of the cam/distributor. That will give an indication if the timing chain jumped.
