Wouldn't you also be able to pull it out of your browser preferences? Have it show you the saved passwords it's using.

If he's just got the "remember me" box checked, the browser stores the authenticated login session in a cookie. Unless he can decrypt that he can't get the password. It's not stored in clear text.

Chris, you're probably thinking of Firefox's password database that you actually can get to show you the saved passwords.

Assuming we're talking about an iteration of Microsoft Windows here....

I believe it's a bit more complicated than that (Microsoft ensures that ).

And, of course, where this stuff is stored depends on the version of the OS - either in the Registry, or in a Windows Credentials file.

From Microsoft Support forums:

View saved user names and passwords on IE8 - Microsoft Answers
How do I retrieve saved passwords in IE9? - Microsoft Answers

And, from the Microsoft knowledge base:
Manage stored passwords, certificates, and other credentials

How To Manage Stored User Names and Passwords on a Computer That Is Not in a Domain in Windows XP

There is at least one utility out there to extract this information and present it to the user, Firefox conveniently has this functionality built-in.

I am a Linux user and and initially had thought that IE had some sort of "show passwords" stuff built into it. If I'd known MS makes it so hard, I never would have thrown that out there.

I used to be a "Admin" on another forum that used "VB" software. I could access a user account and see almost anything the user could see. The password was not visible, but it did have an option to change the password in the event a user needed to have it reset (like this situation).
All that is needed, is a valid email address to send the "new" (temp) password to, so the user can login using it, then change it to whatever they want.
