backfires when trying to start
About 2 years ago I inherited a 1966 F-100 and although I have become very good on the mechanical end my diagnostics skills are not good at all so I would appreciate some help. 2 days ago I was driving down the road and all of a sudden the truck cut out on me and let out a massive backfire so I rolled to the side of the road and when I tried to restart the truck all it would do is backfire every now and again. I put a new 1976 351w inside shortly after I received the truck and it has ran great ever since until now. Any help would be appreciated.

I don't know if anyone else has seen this problem, but mine for instance, I will get the same thing......like every 5k miles or so, what is happening to mine is the distributor hold down bolt gets loose and allows the distributor to rotate in essence making itself retarded...haha, check that. and strap a timing light on, make sure it's good and you have a strong spark. if all that checks out, check and make sure you have good fuel available at the carb and the carb is mixing like it should. worst case scenario could be your timing chain jumped a tooth or two on the crank sprocket so now your cam timing is off, that happened to me on a 390 I used to have. I doubt its serious like that though, I would definately look at the ignition system before anything else though. good luck!
