Just did power steering flush following procedure listed below. Took maybe 20 minutes. Very glad I did because after 10 years fluid was black. Hardest part was getting at the clip on the hose to be removed. Did it myself by only running motor while pumping brakes and turning steering for short bursts so as to not empty reservoir. Used 10 foot 3/8 hose I intend to use when I do the trans flush. Had it empty into a pail next to me at open driver door so I could monitor the color of the fluid coming out and stopped when looked new. Used 2.5 US quarts mercon V. Pinched hose at fitting when I removed it with rag on end so no spill. Must get some air in system where hose removed. Does the system purge this air itself while running or do you have to do it manually somehow? Ford Super Duty Power Steering Flush | Superdutypsd.com

Reason: added info
Nice job.. Mine was pretty growdy when i did it also. Don't worry about the air, It will purge itself. The air will go through the system and into the reservoir. And there is a vent hole in the cap to allow it to breath. Just keep an eye on the level for a few trips to make sure she stays full. If i remember right, I had to add a touch the next day i drove it from things settling down and any air getting pushed through.
Thanks Dan for info its self purging. I'll monitor as suggested. Am curious to see if I can see any difference in steering and braking with the new fluid.
I didn't notice any difference. Just knowing that i did was enough for me.. I see that it is pretty dark again. Might do it again. Been a couple years.
Now that you mention it, I have never done this in my truck. Did the Excursion a few times because of whining, but my truck has been quiet. I have some Shaefers left over from my ATF change so maybe I should do the truck haha.
