I have a 99 SD CC LWB V-10 with a 173,500 miles. When its cold out the P/S pumps whines and the steering is really really stiff. Like there is no power at all. I'm getting ready to change the fluid, but I don't know where the power steering fluid filter is. Also should I just go and slap a new pump on to prevent a future failure? I will refill with synthetic fluid. How do I drain the power steering rack also? I really hate paying $90 hour to the dealer for repair or maintenance work. So hopefully I can do it myself without having to pay the dealer to fix it after I fix it!! Any suggestions or comments are appreciated.
i did mine pretty easy. I used a couple of gallon jugs, sitting on the drivers front tire.
I removed the bolt holding the large canister near resivor, and set it off to the side. Then i pulled the small line off an dreplaced it with my own peice of hose.
I put the hose down past the fender liner and into the jug, and i let it drain. Filled and let drain again. Then i fished the hose back up until it was higher then the filler. and put the hose i removed into an empty jug.
Then with some help, i had them start the truck while i poured fluid into the res to keep it full until i had added 3 qts. Then had them shut it off.
I fished the hose back down and drained res again, then removed hose, reconnected line, and filled, PS worked great after that.
