Hi,
Algae will grow in fuel water pockets. Plays hell with filters
Diesel is also very much like Jet fuel and that can be a real
problem with the jet fuel people.
Sorry it's taken me so long to update. I had knee surgery and I've been unable to crawl around under the truck.
So, I finally got around to removing the drain plug today. First I unbolted and moved the front drive shaft for better access. I bought a set of impact allen wrenches from Harbor Freight, hooked up a couple extensions and my impact wrench and had at it, starting on the low setting and increasing the torque a little at a time. It broke loose at around 320 ft/lb. I replaced the old plug with the upgraded one I bought from Sinister Diesel. Fabulous.
Now for the filter/water separator. Foiled again! Someone had apparently tried to get this off before because the hex head was roached. My 36 mm socket just rounded it right over. Now what?
I was able to get the filter on top of the engine out, so that's done. 2/3rds of the way there. Now I've just got to figure out how to get the damn filter/water separator loose.
Buy new OEM cap so you have it when you get old one off. Due to nut being rounded off, maybe try a "strap wrench" and see if you can get the HFCM cap loose? I think that is what you are talking about?
Maybe see if some vice-grips tightly locked on will dig into the plastic and allow enough leverage to loosen? If I am understanding it properly, the cap is toast.... so the goal is just to get it loose and off?

Yup, the cap is toast. Around the rim though, there seems to be a scalloped edge similar in appearance to an canister oil filter. I didn't know if a tool like the kind used to remove those type existed.
I tried to remove my HFCM cover today as I suspect algae and other gunk is in there. I got the fuel lines off, but got stumped on the 4 bolts that hold on the cover (not the 3 nuts through the frame, but the 4 nuts that hold the cover onto main filter/separator housing). I tried a 6 point 6mm, but it wouldn't go on. The 7mm was too big. I'm guessing I need a 12 point 6mm. Can anyone confirm? Thanks.

Good to hear back from you on this update
How is the knee?
I had to buy a new cap for mine also. Someone liked vise-grips
too much. The 6 point I use for the oil filter did a good job at getting
it to come off. I had to smack it a few times to get the old cap off of the socket.
If you are stuck try some sheet rubber under the strap of the strap wrench.
Clean as much of the dust and grease off the cap as you can.
The spring type spin oil filter wrench may also work to remove this beast.
69CJ - 12 pt. Cap looked pretty chewed to start with. I've used the same socket to get the oil filter cap off with no problems. I'll have to buy a new cap and use some vise-grips or maybe a strap wrench to get the old one off. I'll also buy one of the 6 pt sockets.
Yahiko - Thanks for asking. The knee is coming along fairly well. Out of work right now and going through P.T. We'll see what happens.

Whenever dealing with plastic or soft metal use 6 point over 12 point. 12 point has its uses I just haven't found out where yet. There are special nuts and bolts that require 12 point.
