I am preparing to change out my filters. I am pretty comfortable with my knowledge of doing the change, but I had a question about the lower filter/water catcher. Do you have to pull that drain plug to remove the water/fuel? I had heard that when you pull the cap off to change the filter all the contents will come out anyway....and that plug is there to drain the water without removing the filter if needbe...thoughts?
I always pull the little plug and let it drain out. It's still gonna make a mess on the frame, and somehow you no matter where you position yourself if your luck is anything like mine, lol.

How about when it runs down into your armpit. I always drain it the best I can first.
I hate changing the fuel filters. Kind of like a prostate exam, just something that has to be done. You can make your life a little easier by going to the upgraded drain plug. And a small fingered woman doctor helps too.
start with less than half a tank of fuel. Do open the drain, and have the new improved one ready to install.
If you have 4WD, I understand this gets really difficult.

I need to go on ahead and do it, so I will have to do it using the original one as of now. Doing it Saturday!
The drain plug will remove most of the diesel and any water that was trapped. You'll still get a pint to a quart total. I drain the lower first. Seems to use the upper to hold the fuel in the lines. My buddy 2010 lost 4 gallons changing the upper first then the lower. Another buddy 2010 also only lost a quart doing the lower first. Go figure.
You have the correct info. Drain water as nessecary (sp), change filters as scheduled.
If you wait until you run the tank down to about a 1/4 tp 1/3 tank and park with a slight uphill incline, people seem to not get so much drainage..... yet again, some ALWAYS get a lot out..... it's a crapshoot!
