Keyless entry system on Ford Expl.

I have a 1996 ford exp xlt with a keyless entry system.
If I use the keys on the door, everything workd fine. If I try to use the key bobs, nothing hapens, I have replaced batteries, tried holding down both open and unlock buttons at once and held for 10 seconds.

Any recommendation on how to remedy.?

Apparently, you can't trigger a self-test at home. Here's a quick copy of a page off the service CD. I'm not including the code list because it's presented using old-style ASCII characters to form a chart, and copying it as text gives a thousand extra characters that make it almost unreadable. It takes some time to edit it down, and I just don't feel like it at the moment.

Inspection and Verification

The receiver assembly communicates on the New Generation Star (NGS) Tester diagnostics interface. Diagnostic testing is controlled by turning on outputs, reading inputs, retrieving DTCs, clearing DTCs, direct memory reference and initiating functional tests. Some of the tester's specific capabilities are listed below.

l Self Test and Fault Code reporting on inputs

l Recall last eight alarm trigger events (PIDs)

l Activate all outputs

l Monitor all inputs

l Transmitter TIC/Data Menu

-- Identifies all TICs (Transmitter Identification Codes) programmed to the system

-- Identifies last TIC and button press received

The on-demand self test consists of a module self test and a receiver assembly subsystem input/output self test. Continuous DTCs are not affected when running an on-demand self test.

Note:
Do not press any buttons or switches during the on-demand self test.

The receiver assembly is well equipped to identify bad inputs, but can do little to diagnose bad outputs. The individual testing the system must look for certain outputs to operate during the 10-second self test. The self test should be used for a quick overview of the system to determine if certain subsystems are operating correctly.

The tester PID/DATA menu and the ACTIVE COMMANDS have a full set of tests for alarm and lock systems. Depending upon the option content of a vehicle, certain inputs or outputs may not respond because they are not installed at the time of vehicle manufacture.

Using Rotunda New Generation Star (NGS) Tester

Rotunda New Generation Star (NGS) Tester 007-00500 is a menu-driven device that allows self test diagnostics and DTC retrieval.


Interface

The NGS Tester communicates to the receiver assembly through the On-Board Diagnostic (OBD-II) data link connector. The connector is located in the passenger compartment on the driver's side under the steering column.


Retrieving Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC)

The receiver assembly monitors the system during normal operation and reports concerns in the form of diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). The DTCs can be retrieved with the NGS Tester through the communication link.

The following procedure can be used to retrieve DTCs.

1. Turn the ignition switch to OFF.

2. Locate the tester data link located below the steering column.

3. Note: Only one multi-pin connector is used.

Connect the tester connector to the vehicle data link connector.

4. Note: If the message LO BAT appears in the upper left corner of the read-out display and stays on, replace the tester's 9-volt battery before continuing with the on-board diagnostics. The message LO BAT appears momentarily when power switch is turned off.

Turn on the power switch on the right side of the tester. A steady 00 or blank screen signifies that the tester is ready to start the on-board diagnostics and receive diagnostic trouble codes.

5. With the ignition switch still off, push the button in the center of the tester.

6. Push the button again. This deactivates the sequence.

7. If the tester passes the above test (00 or blank screen with button in TEST position), proceed with the on-board diagnostic procedure. If any diagnostic trouble codes appear during the on-board diagnostics, refer to the symptom chart.



8. Connect Rotunda New Generation Star (NGS) Tester 007-00500 or equivalent to the connector located in the engine compartment. Verify that the tester is in SLOW MODE.

9. Turn on the tester and latch the button down in the TEST position.

10. Turn the ignition switch to RUN.

11. Note: Write down all codes. Code 16 indicates system OK. Do not replace anti-lock brake electronic control module.

Read the first code output; after approximately 15 seconds the next code will be output.


Parameter Identification (PID) Codes

Not all parameter identification (PID) codes displayed on the NGS Tester are functional on Ranger and Explorer vehicles.

sorry I replied to wrong one>

this is fine if you have the GGS tester ( cost appprox $3000)

However, what can the layman do.

Local shop wants $68.00 just to run tester.
