I finally got around to dropping the rear tank on my truck. I got the sender out and was looking on Rock Auto to purchase a new one. Now, the one on rock auto looks like this:
Mine however looks like this:
I wasn't able to find any part numbers on the old sender. I was able to find something similar from Spectra Premium with a part number FG74A.
I guess what I want to know is, would this part work (upon closer inspection I think not) and what part will replace this? I thought the hard part was done when I got the tank dropped. Thanks for any and all help.
The one from rockauto is the proper one for 99% of the trucks out there with 460 engines, since most all had electric fuel pumps inside the tanks. If you look at the one from rockauto, it has wires and a spot for the electric pump to mount, and it also had two fuel line outlets, one is the supply and one is the return.
The one you pulled out of your tank is a conventional unit for a carbed 300/302/351w. Single line, and only the sending unit wiring. If you think someone has converted your truck over, you can guess they may have swapped the tank or the sending unit around, and a conventional sending unit may work.
My experience with those Spectra Premium things hasn't been real good, they don't seem to remain working right for more than about 3 years. I figure on using OEM replacements from hereon out if I can find them.
To try and look up an OEM replacement for your truck, I would need the year, engine, what is the diameter of the hole in the tank, I think that's it. I can see you don't have an electric, in-tank pump which would mean you have a mechanical pump on the side of the engine.
Franklin is right, the one from Rock has accommodations for an electric fuel pump and you don't have the mating electrical connection for that.
It's an '85 F350 with a 460. It has the mechanical pump on the side of the engine. I'll have to measure the orifice when I get home. Any other information you might need?
I don't find an '85 F350 midship tank with one tube/line for a 460. The closest I get is E5TZ 9275-JA, Section 90 Page 30, but it is dual lines. So, what am I missing?
I think I found it on LMC truck's website. I've been a little slow on the uptake I guess. The only problem is they don't have a picture so I can't compare the new to the old... I'll order it and see I guess.

You aren't missing anything, the OP's sender is not original to his truck.
There is no single line sender listed for 1985/86 F350 460 midship tank.
These senders usually have an ID number stamped on them, but I can't see any evidence of same. 'Course the sender is so filthy, one couldn't see a naked maiden, if she was stamped on it.
The truck is 27 years old, so a PO may have swapped the tank from any 1980/84 F100/350.

Thanks, Bill. I'm glad to know that since I've been trying to learn how to use the catalog, with growing success, but just couldn't find that one.
I wasn't able to find one, either, but I paid closer attention to what he (lava) said:
Post #1: "I finally got around to dropping the rear tank on my truck."
That's odd, rear tank there, yet we're looking for a side tank.
Post #9: "I'm assuming both sending units will be the same for both tanks...."
Seems to me this is a Frankentruck.... I googled the ID numbers he posted, found *one* relevant hit:
1985 Ford F350 - 18879335 8 CYL. 5.8L (351 C.I.D.)-W-GAS -midship: 9275 Sender Assy - Fuel Tank (NOT AVAILABLE) **TZ-9275-C Use w/19 gal. aft axle tank - incl. (1) E1VZ 9417-B gasket - one tube - Stamped E5TF-EA, gas exc. 460-unleaded fuel, 1985/ 1986 ; Ford 350 Series
So, if that information is correct, it looks like lava is taking the sender from the rear tank and wanting to use it in the side. I don't expect that to work; while the rheostats are probably the same, the float levers are entirely different.
I have no idea what was originally installed in this truck but I'd guess something different is wanted now. I like Franklin's idea, see if a sending unit for a different engine can be made to work.
