Hutch Mod ?

I ordered the in tank kit from Strictly Diesel and it comes with the Baldwin filter and filter head. I was wondering if the filter put any extra strain on the factory fuel pump? The reason I am asking is I noticed Guzzle installed a Carter helper pump on the tank side of his filter set up to help supply the factory pump. What are your guys thoughts on this? Any body have any trouble with the factory pump after the in tank mods with a filter set up like Strictly Diesel uses?

Others will have better info for you but I just did mine without a helper pump and it seems to be fine. I think the the main thing you that you need to look at in regards to the helper pump or not is the micron rating of the filter and its flow. He used a 2 micron filter if I remember right were as I used a 32 micron filter. I just want to catch any bigger stuff before the pump and anything less than 32 micron can be caught by the engine filter.

I am using a Napa filter though and I am not sure what the rating of the Baldwin is. I have read were a lot of people don't have the helper pump so that is my thinking on what the difference is.

I did the Hutch mod about five years ago...well worth the effort. I installed a Wix 33405 pre-pump and was very pleased with the results. The fuel filter in the engine bay always looked like new and never any water in the fuel bowl (the Wix filter has a water drain...the Wix is 14 micron nominal. I switched to a CAT filter 1R-7049 in January of this year. This filter is 2 micron absolute...will flow up to 15 gpm.

I have never sensed any additional strain on the factory fuel pump with either the Wix or the CAT filters, but when the pump does fail I am going to drop the tank and put a Bosch pump in the tank...the way, IMO, that the system should have been built initially. Push all the way from the pump in tank to the engine...no chance of sucking air at any joint.

Hutch mod with inline glass filter for a couple years. no issues other than the replacement filter screens for the glass type inline's are expensive.

Last September i put this(see pic Napa 3244) in before a big run down to myrtle beach and back. Currently approximately 3,000 miles and still no issues with the pump.

I picked up a Walbro GSL392 pump for around $100. And tossed into my "GO" box. Just encase. I know someone that broke down from fuel pump issues and the dealer charged him Boo-koo bucks to just change the fuel pump. Plus down time waiting for a tow truck with camper on.. And them towing everything to the dealer.. Scary for them. So i bought one to toss in my box.. if it is cheap, I buy it for insurance and put it in my "go" box.

My thinking was any micron small enough to catch particles so the pump is protected or pump screen don't clog is good enough. The water separator fuel filter up on the engine bay will catch the rest. Didn't want to good of a filter to restrict it more than necessary. http://www.fleetfilter.com/filter/wi...ses/33244.html

Same as others have said. I have had the Strickly Diesel (formely ITP Diesel) pre-pump & in-tank mod on my F-250 for about 6 years with @ 100K miles, no problems. HAve had it on my Excursion for about a year. Same deal - no problems. Remember to cut the filler neck tube in the tank to allow the fuel tank to fill up to it's capacity. After that your fuel gauge will stay on full for about 100 miles or so.
