can you put a fuel filter before the pump, I was told by an older mechanic that you can't put a filter before the pump because if the filter gets clogged the pump will crush the filter and the fuel will run out. has anybody heard of this, I wanted to put a filter on before the pump to catch anything before it gets there.
I use a frame mounted cartridge type filter from Summit that's mounted back by the tank, before the pump, for a couple thousand miles now with no issues. Prior to that, I ran a cheap Fram 3/8 in & out steel filter for 15+ years installed on the frame. I just changed the filter once or twice a year.
There is no way a mechanical pump will pull hard enough to crush a filter, but they do push better than they pull so it is better to put the filter after the pump. Maybe some of the high pressure EFI pumps can I don't know but not the mechanical ones.
