I understand it is smart to keep some spare ignition modules handy in a Dent Side, at least the electronic ignition models.
My question is are they all the same? I was at a wrecking yard yesterday and saw a few but I didn't take any because they weren't out of '79s. I know they made a bunch of changes in the late 70's early 80's and didn't know if the changes were enough to warrant a completely different module.
Another thing that may be an issue is that my engine isn't original. It might not be out of a '79 and if the modules are different how would I tell which one I need?
Thanks! I knew it would be on here but you don't always know what to search for. Blue module it is. Spares off of anything except a 1974 or 1975.
Fixed it for you.
Blue model introduced in 1976, used thru 1997 on myriad FoMoCo vehicles: 1U2Z-12A199-AA (replaced D6AZ-12A199-A, D8VZ-12A199-A, D9VZ-12A199-A) .. Ignition Module-blue (Motorcraft DY-893).
There were other modules used 1976/97, but none have a blue plastic square.
I have a 77 100 and replaced the entire wiring harness w/ one from a 75 F100. Didn't have any spark until I swapped the module with the 75 truck, then it was fine. From that, I would think the module would have to match the wiring harness. I'm not sure if engine size or options come into play or not. Looks like you already hav your answer.
