ignition module help?
First of all sometimes it dies, usually before its fully warmed up in the morning, and almost always upon somekind of deceleration/braking, i thought i had it ddown but it was fully warmed up the other morning and it died going 45, but yet again i was about to turn and had the brakes pressed.
The other issue is that a lot of times it doesnt seem to be hittin fire while starting, itll just crank and crank, but as soon as you let the key go itll fire right up!
should i pull the module and test it or would that even find an intermittent issue?
The third issue i think just has to do with the high idle i have, but it tends to deisel pretty badly upon killswitch. and as bad as it is it would almost have be to sparking still(maybe coil breakdown, it is the original motorcraft coil!)
I'm hoping this screams out to one of you and says the brain aint no good or something else!
Thanks for your time

Have you checked the timing? Incorrect timing can lead to difficulty starting.
As far as the dieseling: That could be the result of incorrect timing, lean a/f mixture, or excessive curb idle. If the emissions sticker is still on the underside of your hood, you can find the proper timing setting and idle speeds.
i havent checked the timing on this truck yet. it starts instantly most of the time so it has to be pretty close, but this is the first engine ive dealt with that would have a retarded timing, ford retared them 8* and im just assuming it has the factory timing set, i want to put old 429 gears in it.
it still has the factory motorcraft carb, i pulled the top of it off for a quick half ***rebuild when i bought it the accelerator pump was shot so i all i really did was replace that, clean out the bowl and replace the top gasket, i dont remember checking the floats but surely i did if i replaced needle and seats. im afraid to take the carb off due to the rust on the heat riser tubes, but i need to because for some reason the throttle wont come all the way back in contact with the idle screw, which is why it has a real high idle sometimes, ive asked an old ford mechanic his prognosis is that the secondaries are stuck open or that linkage my be tweaked.
despite the carb issues i dont think its the reason its dying like this, but i really wouldnt know. i may swap carbs one day just to rule that out.
1) Module overheats, engine dies. Module cools down, engine restarts almost at once.
2) Module overheats, engine dies. Module cools down, engine restarts in an hour...or so.
3) Sooner or later, usually sooner, the module overheats, BURNS OUT. Now the engine will not restart.
Taking the module to a parts store to be tested: Since it's cool, it will test OK, unless the little charmer has burnt out.
The module used in 1974...is 1974 only / The module used in 1975...is 1975 only. Both of these modules were problematic. Ford techs referred to them as NeverStart!
There were three different modules used 1976/79. The only one worth a damn is the blue module that was also used into the 1990's.
Modules have a colored plastic square above where the wires feed out used to ID them.
You do not want a 1976/79 CA only red module, it was pure crap from day one! Horror stories have be written about this terd, forget it!
The modules are bolted to the left fender inner apron, across from the V8's red hot exhaust manifold. If replacing the little charmer, use some washers to space it further away from the apron.
The more air flow around the little charmer...the better.
My 74 would be a candidate someday so thanks for the heads up!
.
Good idea to always keep a spare module handy. I've got a 3 connector one from a 81 police car that has served me on ocassion. Just used 2 connectors.
