Hi All- I have a 1974 F350 w/460, C6 and original electronic ignition. I am wanting to replace the original duraspark ICM and per my research (see information below) it looks like there were some years that the ICM's were better than others. My question is: Has anyone replaced their 74 or 75 original ICM with the one designed for the 76-79 blue module (Motorcraft DY 893)? I'd like to "upgrade" to the blue module if it is indeed interchangeable.
Thank you for your assistance!
Terry
"The module used in 1974...is 1974 only / The module used in 1975...is 1975 only. Both of these modules were problematic. Ford techs referred to them as NeverStart!
There were three different modules used 1976/79. The only one worth a damn is the bluemodule that was also used into the 1990's.
Modules have a colored plastic square above where the wires feed out used to ID them.
You do not want a 1976/79 CA only redmodule, it was pure crap from day one! Horror stories have be written about this terd, forget it!
The modules are bolted to the left fender inner apron, across from the V8's red hot exhaust manifold. If replacing the little charmer, use some washers to space it further away from the apron.
The more air flow around the little charmer...the better." <!-- / message -->

A blue module will not drop directly into your setup because the wiring and connections are different. Technically 1974 is not even Duraspark, it's just generic "breakerless" ignition.
If you want to use a blue-grommet module (definitely a good choice because they are readily available), you will need to match the wiring to that setup. I do not know if the pickup module in the distributor would need to change as well, maybe ND can let us know if the part numbers interchange.

Post 1 contains my info, begins with "The module used in 1974..." / Was taken verbatum from another of my posts.
1U2Z-12A199-AA (replaced D6AZ-12A199-A & D9VZ-12A199-A) .. Ignition Module-blue plastic square (Motorcraft DY-893) / Available from Ford.
1976/90's many FoMoCo vehicles excepting some sold new in CA vehicles. Especially those with the red POS module used 1976/79. It's pure unadultrated CRAP = Stay away!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- D4PZ-12A112-A .. Stator aka Magnetic Pickup Coil (Motorcraft DU-1A) / Available from Ford.
1974/79 ALL Passenger Cars/Trucks/Bronco's & Econoline V8's except 1979 LTD/Grand Marquis 351W with EEC.
FTE has Ford Dealer Parts Dept sponsors that give parts discounts off the actual MSRP. Not the "jacked up" MSRP then so-called "discounted price" that many snakes offer.

Thank you both, FMC400 and ND for your help and information. Does anybody happen to know the Motorcraft part number for the 74 only ICM so I can do some research? Thanks!

I think I found it: D4AE 12A199 A1A which is D4AZ12A199C

Yours is the black grommet module, run the Motorcraft numbers through a Google or Ebay search, you'll find one eventually.
Don't be tempted by the less expensive off-brand modules, they're short lived and you'll be back at square one before you know it, buy genuine Motorcraft.
Agreed. I had to replace my module last month and opted for Motorcraft. I was surprised to find how quickly the truck starts now (barely have to touch the key). I almost wonder if some of the off-brand boxes don't have the start retard feature.

Thanks for the link-that is great! Question: Some of my research indicates that I need Ford part # D4AZ-12A199-A and some research indicates I need D4AZ-12A199-C. What's the difference? Does it matter? Both seem to be black grommet??

Fmc, according to "Lariat 85" in post #16 (below) your suspicians are correct. Based on my own experience i'd have to concur, i don't believe the start retard function is present on the elcheapo modules.

Honestly, i don't believe it matters as long as it's a black grommet module, though i don't know what the exact "differences" are, if any, maybe ND or FMC could elaborate further.
Since -C is what ND pulled up, that's what I would go with. -A would have been an earlier revision of the same part. No way of knowing what the actual engineering changes would have been between the two revisions.

FoMoCo replaces part numbers more often than women change their minds, I kid you not.
