The reason I said manual pcm is because I have an auto pcm in my 5-speed crew cab and it lopes when started. Since the C6 doesn't "talk" to the pcm, I figured use a manual one to avoid the lopeing.
I'm told it lopes because its searching for the trans range sensor.
Auto PCM will be fine if that's what you have. The PCM just sends signals out to shift, speed monitoring, etc and doesn't care if anything is on the other end of the wire or not.
Heck, I'm running a manual transmission off of a Automatic PCM. Works just fine.
Edit: Oh, I see you already know that's a possibility. I don't know what causes it for sure, but I've heard people say that it's the lack of a MLPS that causes the lope. So I guess using a manual PCM could be a good way to circumvent that.

The PCM does monitor some transmission stuff. Mine flashes at me cuz my Torque Converter is messed up. So .. the PCM does talk to the tranny and vice versa. I've read elsewhere that they Auto PCM will start storing codes if it doesn't see the E4OD components. If you've removed the auto shifter, then you probably don't see the flashing OD light that the PCM is trying to flash.
What did the pre-94.5 diesels use for vacum that had the C6 behind them?
Read page 3 mark explains it all...the idi engines used a vacuum regulator hooked to the injection pump for a vacuum reference for the C6. No idea what the PSD used yet as they didn't have an injection pump.
If Mark decides to chime back in I'm sure he can correct me.
But they are basically the same except the E4OD has overdrive.
The newer 4R100 used behind the diesels came with 6 pinion steel planets vs 3 or 4 pinion (I don't recall exactly) alum planets in the E4 and C6, so the 4R are even stronger.
I believe that 4r100 pinion can be swapped into the e4od for the added strength
Ford does do some weird stuff. my wife works there. they make changes after job 1 all the time. sometimes shes the one making those changes. truck in my sig came with the double joint for the front driveshaft up by the case. I run the stock D50 ttb its my understanding they didnt come this way on a lot of guys trucks. those of you who have already done the D60 swap know what im talking about. been researching and shopping for a 97 D60 to stick under it.
