Question what transmission ?

looking at a 96 f250 with a 7.3 powerstroke, it has a automatic, that shifts only when you let off gas, do you know what transmission it is? 4r100? and any idea why it shifts like that?

It probably has an E4OD. Does it have OD OFF on the end of the shifter? If so, that's the E4OD. If not, it has a C6.

I also have the E40D in my 450. What is the average life of the E40D? I had mine rebuilt at 40,000 and it now has 138,000. Was wondering if I should do a rebuild again. Once in a while it shifts hard but other than that it seems fine. Most of the time it is pulling a trailer or body is loaded with materials. I change the fluid and filter every winter which is about 8,000 miles per year.

It could be a C6. Both were available in 1996.

The E4OD can last over 200,000 miles. I've seen them do that. Changing the fluid often helps.

I may be wrong what tranny I have. I have a 95 450. Did they have the C6 and the E40D in 95?

Yes they did. Both the C6 and E4OD were available from 1989 through 1996. You could have either.

Is there a easy way of identifying what tranny is in it? Maybe a code in the vin or they look diferent. Is one more durable than the other?

I wouldn't, but everyone has their favorites. I'd much rather have an E4OD than a C6.

Which one do you have?

I believe the E40D is based on the C6... they just added an extra gear.

You're right. The E4OD is basically a C6 with an overdrive, a lockup torque converter, and electronics.
