Exclamation It only gets better

Hello again guys!
I reinstalled my transmission and put everything back together. I got that shifter retainer cap from cobra transmission and it was an exact fit! Now I went to install my shifter and it won't shift Ito any other gears. It's "stuck" in first .. Is there a easy way of fixing this? I had the rear off the ground and it the tires move. And the clutch works it just won't shift into any gears. When I reinstalled the shifter it went right into a slot and just won't go into reverse or 2.3.4! What do I do without taking it all out?!

On my T18 I remember sometimes having problems installing the shifter, there are some devices down inside that the shifter rod needs to fit between just right.

I think those devices are "forks" or some such but I forget.

In any event, I would pull the shifter out and peer into there with a flashlight and see if you can see where the shifter needs to go, it doesn't just drop in *****-nilly.

Looking down into the shift tower, there are three selectors (one for 1st & 2nd, one for 3rd & 4th, one for reverse) that all need to be in line & central (i.e. - not all forward, or all back).
When they are in position, the transmission is in neutral, & the three selectors form a slot that the shifter fits into when you install it.

The selectors can easily be flicked into position with a large screwdriver if there's no load on the transmission.
Then, as Chris said, the shifter tip can be carefully fed into the formed 'slot', & the retainer & spring screwed down.

Assuming it's a T18 from Chris' comment - BE CAREFUL not to lose the pin that fits through the side of the tower & into the shifter ball slot - especially not to lose it INTO the transmission.

If this happens, you can retrieve it with a magnet through the PTO cover, once it drops right to the bottom.

That's a marvelous description, Ken, lots better and more thought out than mine.

I think Eric has an NP-sumthin-or-other, I vaguely remember him having problems finding the shift lever cap thinger - a kind where you push & twist and not screw down - that I believe he just recently acquired NOS someplace.

I would imagine the NP-whatever is pretty much the same as the T-18 but of course I have no way to know for certain (one of the reasons why my description was so vague).

I think.... I really don't remember, and he doesn't specify here............

I see from another thread that you have an NP435 so don't worry about a 'lost pin' or 'screw-on retainer'.
Otherwise, everything applies.

Hey guys,
Just saw the replies. I actually took the top shifter housing off and lined all the forks up in the neutral position ... "I found an image on google"... Then reinstalled it.. Worked perfectly..
I just read the post about the forks lining up and creating a area where the shifter would drop in and that's exactly how it was! I was nervous about pulling the shifter housing off, but wasn't bad at all! It was a good Friday!
