I have a newly aquired 1949 F-5. The shifter got ""stuck" at one point, I think in 4th but it wouldn't move. I took the shifter tower off and it still seemed stuck. After some wiggling/jiggling the shifter seemed to come unstuck. Now a couple of questions please
1. Why would the shifter get stuck in the first place. I don't see anything that looks bent or broken
2. I moved the gears around while I had the cover off so it was in neutral (I think). At least the engine could run while the gears didn't so I presume it's neutral. Do the shifting forks and gears have to be in a certain position when I re-attach the shifting tower?.....and exactly how do I kow I have them in that position if so?
Obviuosly I know very little about the inner working of a manula transmission, but any help would be appreciated
a couple reasons a "top loader" shifter (do you have a T-9 or a T-98?) can get stuck is because of wear and loose spring tension. the springs behind the ***** that hold the detents or the under the shifter cap. wear happens everyplace, look at the end of the shifter, and the slots it fits into when shifting. do the shift forks still have plastic clips on them?
