I just sold my v10 250 and down graded to an 87 250 with 96,000 on the ticker.I just drove it home tonight and it made me smile because I love old trucks and its my 1st diesel.
I worked on cars for ford for 10 years but I never touched a diesel so I am a newbi. I Bought a 6.9 idi with a c6 and 4:10 rear end and man does this thing hum doing 70mph.
At 70mph Im about 28-2900rpms and that seems to high to me so whats the easist solution to turn 70mph safely and efficiently? 3:23 gears?
Im not ready to do a 5 speed swap yet but I will later but for now I need to drop the rpms. will an e4od go in here or will it need a controller?
In the future I am planning on pulling a 25-28 5th wheel about 5k lbs so I don't want to kill all the power with gears so what should I do. Thanks and I did search and read threw about 100 post but my eyes hurt lol
Yes, it won't hurt the engine. It's true. Old engines with inefficient gearing were built to rev all day long, my '67 mustang is the same way. But the fuel cost tends to hurt. You can put an E4OD in, but yes it will require a controller, because it's an electronic transmission. If you're comfortable with some creative splicing, the stock E4OD controller off of a later model vehicle can be made to work in your early truck. But it seems that a lot of guys who do the E4OD swap prefer the aftermarket controllers.
