E40d - Idi ?

Hi all, mainly asking David 85 (but also anyone else with info) about putting an E40D on an IDI engine,

David - I read where you built one for your truck. What mods were made internally to the trans (I've heard they are not very reliable)? Was there much work required to install and hook-up ? Do they work OK with the non electronic older trucks. I have a C-6 now, but would like to have the overdrive feature.
I get about 14 mpg with 3:55s.
How much difference do you think it made in MPG ?

Thanks

I don't know about the older trucks but mine came with an E4OD in it.

The only electronics in my truck are for the Tranny and Stereo.

I am pretty sure that a Gasser E4OD is different than a Diesel E4OD Make sure you have the right one.

royzell, I sent you a PM that I hopes answers some of your questions, if you have anymore, you can post them here or PM me back.

The electronics are only needed to run the tranny, basically a standalone controller. What conditions are you running the truck in? speed? load? hills? If I remember right, Shawnigan Lake doesn't have very many high speed highways.

Personally I think 3.55s are one of the worst gear setups there is. My gasser F150 has them and they suck. Running the numbers on how a 3.55 powered diesel would be, and I think you would end up "caught between gears" so to speak in many sutuations at most lower highway speeds. While 4.10s gives you more torque, and 3.08s even more in 2nd gear.

David - Thanks for the reply and the PM. I have a 4WD so probably won't change ratios.

My truck is turboed so definitely would need to beef up an E40D if I go that way. I often am on the highway with the truck to Victoria or elsewhere, as well as some local stuff. I like the 'lock-up' feature of the E40D for fuel efficiency.

'Lots to chew on - thanks

You could also swap to a five speed if you don't mind driving stick. But I prefer auto and the torque converter makes the vehicle more forgiving in everyday situations (also keeps RPMs more consistent). You can get an aftermarket E4OD with all the upgrades already in, or find a used one and build it up yourself. Either way it will be pricy.

I used to drive semi's, and my knees still hurt. I swore I would never shift gears again in my life !

I think I'll keep my eyes peeled for a good E40D, or a wrecked truck with one, or ??

Thanks

The knees hurting are because of the cowboy boots.

At least that is why mine hurt, I never used the clutch after I was rolling.

Likewise with no clutch rolling, cowboy boots are for two-steppin'

I don't think it was the long haul that did my knees in but a year and a half driving a beer delivery truck. I was in and out of the cab, up and down, liftin and totin on cement all day etc...

that after a misspent youth being athletic, something sure hurt them anyhow...

are we off-topic ?
