There is some noticeable "play" in my steering column (73 F250 2wd auto). I don't know a better way to describe it. I can hold the steering wheel and move it up, down, and side to side. Everything works correctly, but the movement creates a rattle on bumpy roads, one that I would like to eliminate.
It this just a loose part inside the column, or does this require some other repair?
I believe there is an upper bearing which can be replaced but I don't have a part number for you. link> LMC <link or="" one="" of="" those="" outfits="" should="" have="" one.="" <link or="" one="" of="" those="" outfits="" should="" have="" one.="" link or one of those outfits should have one.

I also had play in my steering on a 75 that I had just purshased. It turned out to be the rubber bushing between the box and the coloumn. If this is your issue, then a replacement is available at most auto parts stores.
I have this same problem in my '76. I assumed it's the bushing, since the wheel turns smoothly; otherwise, I'd figure it's the upper bearing. I ordered the bushing from Dennis Carpenter, and it's rubber. Does that thing really eliminate the play at the wheel? I was expecting hard plastic.
Is it the column itself or the steering wheel and the column guts only? Check to make sure the hanger that attaches the column to the underside of the dash is tight. You have to remove the plastic cover to get to it.
It is not the column itself on mine. The steering wheel is tight. There is just this slight play, and therefore rattle, and a bushing or bearing would make the most sense from the sounds of it.

It's not the column itself on mine, either. You can see lateral movement of the wheel relative to the column. And, yes, the wheel is on tight
