does anyone know where i can get the bearings that sit in the upper portion of the steering column, (under the steering wheel). and the bearings for the lower portion of my steering column. a part number would probably help me out also.
if not is there something i can fab in there?
I got them from Dennis Carpenter. You probably should replace the thrust bushings while you are in there. The entire cost was less then 25 bux or so to replace everything. Just a little effort. Billemc
you can also buy them from npdlink.com both the bushing and the bearings top and bottom are alike i think? the bushing that they are talking about is the bushing that sets on top side (inside) of the bearing and helps center the steering shaft and keeps it set in the bearing.

when the bearings went out on my 70 the steering got real loose but the wheel had more of a side to side motion you may want to check the rag joint that could give a up and down movement
i was missing the bushings that hold the steering shaft securley in the bearings. but i just replaced both of them aolg w/the bushings and turn signal cam and wiring harness that i just got in the mail from national parts depot. so everything is working like new again! BIG YEAH!
p.s. replaced the steering coupling a couple of months ago.
I must be some sort of a genetic throw back to the days of the"tinker"...I scrounge every thing. So when I had a bottom steering bearing lock up on me one day I had to tear into it if I still wanted to be driving the next day.I found that the factory bottom bearing likes to collect all the dirt and trash that gets into the column.I went hunting through one of my parts drawers where I throw bearings of every type that I think looks useful.I found a bearing with an OD that fit nicely into the column tube with an ID that fit the shaft...I had to do some grinding to make a new spacer since the replacement is thicker, but the new bearing is a sealed ball bearing type, about 10 times more than needed...nice-and-tight,now I need to look at that rag joint.
