question for the timing guru's

OK guys this is gonna be a little long sorry. I have one of those fox valley eBay timing adapters, I know it wont work as a stand alone unit for timing but I figure I can make it work, here is my idea...

Since no timing light will let me time ATDC I figure I can do the math myself, I remember reading somewhere that 1/16" on our balancer is 1*. (I will actually do the math myself before I try this to make sure) I also remember reading that lumy prob at sea level (I'm on long island) should be 7* ATDC. (please someone correct my if my numbers are wrong)

So I figure if I make a nice visable mark on my timing plate 7/16" above the 0, hook up the fox valley adapter and use it to trigger my timing light. Then bring her up to 1400 RPM and time the groove on my balancer to the mark I made on the timing plate I would be at 7* ATDC

Does this make sense? Or have I been drinking to much today? Any advise or comments would be appreciated

Fill me in here. How does this Fox Valley adapter attach to the engine? Does it go in a glow plug hole, or does it clamp to an injector line? We need to know this to help you out accurately.

You sound like you are heading in the right direction, but I think you need to time to about 2* ATDC instead of 7* ATDC.

He's using lumy method, not the pulse method. Lumy method is ATDC, pulse method is BTDC.

the 1/16" to 1* is not always 100% accurate though its a good base line to start with

OK cool thanks a lot guys. I figure this will get me much closer then by ear after I change my IP. At the very least it will be close enough to run good for a while till I either find someone with all the proper tools or find some money so I can splurge on some more tools for myself

i did my injectors and ip about a year ago and just timed it by ear which i know im pry off but believe me it cant be by more than a 1* or so, runs great, high idle and all sounds the way it should and ive had 0 problems. However i know a guy at a local big name diesel shop here who has the meter to time it but getting our schedules to line up is darn near impossible lol

sounds like u are on ur way man

Nice thanks you guys are great and the wealth of knowledge on here just can't be beat. I figure it was like 50 bucks on eBay so it was worth a shot. Reading the instructions its clear it was intended for something like a true lumy probe set up. But it will trigger my timing light and i can do math so i figured i could make it work besides using things they way they were intended is never any fun LOL. Thanks a million brothers. I hope to at least try and give it a go on my present shot IP next weekend and ill keep u posted

After seeing that dynamic timing spec. sheet, I guess 2* ATDC is a little to advanced. About 4 or 5* ATDC would be more ideal.
